Questions about a new K98k

I received a K98k over the weekend and have a couple of questions. First of all, what is the metal-capped hole in the stock behind the sling cut-out? Can the metal pieces be easily removed?

that big round disk is there so you can take apart the bolt(remove the firing pin) in the field. it is non removeable from the stock.

Exactly. Unofficially (or officially perhaps) German troops would reseat loose bullets using that same disk. In wartime, when bullet production is increased "hundreds or thousands fold," quality control all but goes out the window; or at least it did during the world wars.

I remember seeing that before but putting it out of my head because the only Mausers I had experience with before (M24/47s & 48s) didn't have that take-down tool in the stock. I just drilled a hole in a 2x4 which did the trick.

best way to disassemble the bolt too, just the right length and width, push straight down and nothing should go wrong
