How old do you have to be to purchase a handgun from a private seller? I know you must be 21 to buy from a dealer or pawn shop but I recently heard that you only have to be 18 to buy one from an individual and can't find anything to confirm this, is that correct? Thanks.
You must be 21 in order to legally own a handgun regardless of where you purchase it.
Actually anyone over the age of 18 can have a handgun. If a mother or father gave a hand gun to their child over the age of 18 there is no law against that. You just can't buy one until you are 21. In North Carolina which this board is a North Carolina discussion board.

Those same rules apply in South Carolina too. Also, CCW holders must be 21. I think a law abiding citizen under 21 can carry a weapon in the glove box outside of the home, but that's it.

Well, that's news to me too. I've been out of the loop since my state law enforcement days. I certainly saw plenty of responsible teenagers packing pistols in Iraq.

The right to bear arms comes with the responsibility to not abuse the right, by reckless handling, banishing, and carelessness. Those rules apply to any and all ages. I'm glad to see this law take effect. There are plenty of responsible young adults, including returning war veterans, who have already set a good example.

^ An individual does NOT have to go through a FFL if he is selling to another individual in person. If you have to send it through the mail, THEN you need a FFL.
"Handgun Purchases" have to be processed by a FFL holder. F as in federal and federal law sez 21 to PURCHASE!
Only if you purchase through an FFL holder (dealer, pawn shop, collector, manufacturer) who is held to federal laws. Those weapons need to be checked in and logged. Local (private) sales are under state laws.
Now that's news to me.
From your link
Pitts said gun retailers would still have to comply with state and federal firearms laws.
He said he sees no need to change the minimum age of 21 for a concealed weapons permit in South Carolina. Now if someone can legally buy a hand gun they should be able to CCW
A CWP can be used in lieu of NCIS when purchasing FFL logged firearms (dealers, pawn shops, manufacturers and transfers). Therefore, it can be used to directly contest federal laws. If contested, we can lose our privilege to use CWP instead of NCIS and/or lose the right for those between 18 & 21 to own a handgun.
I think to find out for sure, you read the laws for your state and or call whomever is in charge of firearms in your state.
NEVER TAKE ANYONE'S WORD FOR IT. I mean you can, but remember, it'll be you dealing with whatever if it turns out they were wrong.
Not trying to say anyone is lying or is wrong or doesn't know. Just saying you should get answers to these kind of questions straight from the source is all...
