Substitute heart healthy type spread for the butter in the white sause as well as using skim milk.

I think there are "lean versions" of the chipped beef which was my vote for the meat. Venison would be a good sub.

Whip it up and eat 1/2 as much as normal, the ticker should be good to go!

CHIPPED BEEF ON TOAST
(a.k.a. "S h i t on a Shingle" or "SOS")

Ingredients:
2 tbs. real butter
1 lb. ground beef (hamburger)
1 med. onion, chopped
¼ cup garlic, chopped
2 cups whole milk
¼ cup flour
1 beef bouillon cube (optional flavor enhancement)
Salt and pepper to taste
6-8 slices bread
Cooking Instructions:
Melt butter in pan over medium heat. Add garlic and onion and cook until transparent. Add ground beef. Cook 2-3 minutes to brown. Do not drain fat. Add milk (reserve ¼ cup for later), salt & pepper. Bring to boil, add bouillon cube; stir around to disolve. Mix flour and remaining milk together. Slowly add to boiling mixture until it begins to thicken. Don't over thicken the gravy, it should drop off the spoon. Salt and pepper to taste. (Hint: the more pepper the better.) Serve over buttered toast. Enjoy.
*Note: An old military breakfast favorite. This was called "**** on a Shingle" back in the good old days of World War II. Most people who eat this still refer to it as such.

I always had it with Chipped beef...huh...learn something new everyday!

Thumbs up

Never could get enough of it in the Navy. They seemed to prefer mashed potatoes and gravy.
My Dad makes his SOS with country sausage and adds some cheese to make it richer - I can hear my arteries clogging!

Whenever I have a leisurely weekend morning, I almost always make the stuff, with chipped beef not hamburger. I had it both ways in the service and like the chipped beef better. You've gotta make sure you have lots of bread for the gravey.
