I just wanted to say hello and welcome my self to the site. I wanted to find a site were I can get help on general firearm questions, also I just moved to Phoenix, AZ so I wanted to know if this site is a good source of info on shooting around the area and finding classes and courses or would your recommend another place to go? Any help would be cool.

Welcome! I haven't seen lots of good local info here yet, but maybe we can change that. I have been shocked by the good answers I have gotten on my couple of questions here. Very knowledgeable people are kind enough to share it on this site when you ask.

Ben Avery shooting range offers courses. The Scottsdale Gun Club offers some cool looking classes as well. I have never taken classes at either, other than Hunters Ed. Hunters education teaches the basic shooting positions and if you ever want to hunt it gives you permanent bonus points in every species. It also teaches some basic first aid and gun safety. I am 30ish and have only been in to shooting for about a year I found it to be a helpful class, although basic.

I live in the Arrowhead area, so I am going to tell you about places that may not be the closest to you. Table rock mesa is north of Phoenix on the I-17 and is a very popular shooting spot. Ben Avery shooting range is a good place to go because the range boss guys are mostly cool and willing to help if you want it, from what I am told. I just hate structured environments and enjoy shooting garbage more than paper.

If you are going to find your own spot, just make sure you are out of city limits and pick up your garbage. If you are at least a 1/4 mile away from structures with a good backstop no one will bother you. Even if you are miles away from anything, you may be in city limits, so always check a map. The city councils here think its a great idea to annex half the world, just in case anyone ever builds anything on it.

Also lots of areas are open to hunting, but not target shooting. Like I said, if it's not posted that way and you pick up your garbage no one will bother you. You will find lots of places where people don't pick up out there, and it is a real eyesore.

I have shot handguns at the Scottsdale Gun Club a couple of times. They rent lots of different handguns, which is cool if you want to try it before you buy it. Get ready for an annoying sales pitch to join their club every time you go, though.

Send me a private message if you would like more info from me.

howdy and welcome aboard.

Unfortunately all of AZ's national forest and BLM land is closed to shooting due to fire danger. I've never been to Ben Avery but if it's anything like Rio Salado (aka usury pass range) then it's worth the drive.

If you are on the west side, there is a new range near Buckeye. It is only open on Saturday and Sunday, but it is new, not very crowded and friendly. It is on Az 85 going to Gila Bend around 3 miles south of the Gila River bridge at the Buckeye Hills Recreation area. Fees are $7, but you need to have all firearms cased and unloaded when you go to the range.

Hello Hollowpoint,

I agree with the others, this is a great site, a lot of good info on just about anything. I am in Tempe, and I got my CCW training at a place called Caswells in Mesa. I believe they have training all the way up to advanced, but I've not taken it. Nice indoor range, not huge, but I've never been to the Scottsdale gun club.

Usery Pass is a good outdoor range for the East valley.
