New here and question

Hello, I am new to this spot. I have several milsups. Among them I have a sporterized 1917...(I didn't do it!) I inherited it from my Grandfather. I also have an Enfield NO4 MK1. It was obviously used in combat. The sights are still blackened and the receiver has OD paint on it. My question before I begin to clean and finish this piece is would you try and preserve the paint or get it down to blueing?

Hello and welcome to G&G.

Unfortunately, I am not knowledgeable in the area of your question and wouldn't even begin to help you. I do know, if the gun is original, it's best to not touch it. And in some cases, sometimes, even if not original, one, if not qualified or knowledgeable, can sometimes do more harm then good and depending on the item or area in need of repair or restoration, or the value or possible value, it might be best to leave it alone?

But, I'm sure someone with knowledge and experience will be able to assist you far better. Either way, Good luck...

There was an OD green paint used as a rust preventative , on rifles used in the south Pacific or high humid areas. You would see this on No5's mostly and No4's pop up every now and then.
IMHO
I'd leave the OD paint alone , it's supposed to be there.

Photo's ?

I am going to try and clean it and preserve what OD paint is left. It is very spotty. The rifle probably hasn't been cleaned in 60 years.....
