Is $700 for a synthetic stock/stainless finished Mini 14 a good deal? It is in very good condition and comes with 2 factory 20rd mags. Also, since Mini 14s are chambered in .223, does that mean that 5.56 wouldn't work?
$700.00 wouldn't be a terrible price if it were a brand new firearm. I am assuming by your description that this rifle is in used (but very good) condition. Being that it's used, I'd say between 600-650 would be a fair price on a lightly used stainless Mini with the extra mag. The Mini is stamped .223, but 5.56Nato will run through it just as well. I called and spoke to the fine folks at Ruger and asked them the same question. I was told by them that the Mini 14 (as long as it's not the target version) can shoot the 5.56Nato.
The factory 20 round mags are going for $30 each. Is the Mini a Ranch Rifle, or is it one of the older Minis? Yes, it shoots .223 and 5.56. $700 is a bit much, you used to be able to order them from Walmart for $605. It really depends on where you live. Most of the used Minis in my area are under $600. I bought mine before the election, so the prices may be off, but $450 and $550 each. If it's the Ranch Rifle, make sure it comes with the Ruger scope rings.
I got one shipped in 2 weeks ago. Mini 14 ranch rifle in 223. owners manual says it will shoot 5.56 also. (* intersting note rl356 on the target version*) gun comes with blued barrel, wood stock, and factory supplied scope rings. current retail, new, $699.99.
I'm seriously kicking myself, I sold my factory stainless folder 2 years ago for $400.00. ARGH.... what was I thinking!!!!
Seems a little high without seeing it. I picked up a Almost new NRA special edition with 2 mags for $675.
5.56 and 223 are the same.
5.56 Nato, and the .223 Remington are not the same thing. They differ in a couple of ways. First off, as previously mentioned, the 5.56 Nato is a higher pressure round. Secondly, the overall dimension of the 5.56 Nato is slightly different than the .223 sporting cartridge.

I thought that it was a little strange myself that all of the Mini 14's are capable of firing the 5.56 cartridge except for the target model. I didn't think to ask, and they didn't mention, the reason why this is.

Accuracy. The chambers on a 5.56 are slightly different and are not conducive to accuracy with .223 ammo.
Yes, $700 seems a little on the high side for a used mini-14.
I agree, offer him $450 - $500.
I had a mini-14 and shot nothing but 5.56 NATO through it (well, I did do some handloads too) and it functioned perfectly. You are perfectly all-right to shoot it.

It may be that their target model is using less freebore for better accuracy, so it may be that particular model (target model) may not shoot 5.56. it would be interesting to find out. thats the only thing I can think of as to why they would exclude that one.
To my surprise our Wal Mart has a Mini -14 on the shelf which is the basic wood stocked model priced "under" $700.00.
So maybe you can Judge your rifle from this one as far as price since the one your looking at is used.
Though the one your interested in to me is a nicer model...A.H
