M-1D IHC Bolt problem. . .

I have an M-1D Garand manufactured by the International Harvester Company. When I bought it, it came with a Springfield bolt installed and the IHC bolt in a bag. The rifle fires properly with the Springfield bolt, but with the IHC bolt it really seems "destructive" as it goes into battery. The IHC bolt does exhibit "wear and tear" from its faulty "fitting." Can this bolt be repaired, or must I purchase a new one? How can I be sure a new IHC bolt will not be ill-fitting also? Please advise. Thank you.

You cant without gauges, swapping bolts randomly can be expensive and possible dangerous

The IHC bolt may well be worn out. Did the seller mention anything about it? Perhaps he included the old bolt just for the sake of "correctness" if the rest of the rifle is all IHC parts. Just a thought.

GunnerDave: You may have hit the nail upon the head. I believe you to be correct. And, according to Orlando if I purchase a new bolt probably a gunsmith would have to measure the clearance within the receiver and on the new bolt. Thank you both for a timely and beneficial response.

Good advice given. Now, assuming that the IHC bolt HAD een used in your rifle, and it exhibits damage from so being used, I would really be concerned about the overall condition of the rifle. Is there a drawing number on the front receiver leg? What is it?

Glad to be of help. You might put a post on the forum asking if any members in your area have gauges. Many M1 collectors have at least a set of throat erosion/muzzle/headspace gauges, and some like myself can also check gas cylinders, though I don't have the formal arsenal-type cylinder gauges, (mine is a set of three machined bar stock trial gauges). You may have someone reasonably close to you that can help you out.
