Gi.45

I'm buying one monday when my grandfather gets out of the hospital.

Is there anything I should know about these pistols before I buyone? Any adjustments I should make or polishing of the ramp I should do before I take it shooting? Thanks for the suggestions.

I got one a few months ago. I have had absolutely no issues with it. I've put about 1,000 rounds through it since may. When I got it I was thinking I might modify it, but I have decided not to. All the rounds through my GI have been either 230 grain ball or 200 grain lead cast semi wad cutters.

Ah ok. I have various sorts of reloaded ball, hollow point, and some hand loads of mine loaded with a 200gr. semi wadcutter. Thanks for the reply.

They will handle any FMJ ball with no problems. You'll eventually run into a hollow point that won't feed smoothly. I use 185 grain Federal or Remington fully jacketed hollow points (JHP) for CCW and 230 grain FMJ for practice. Wilson and Shooting Star mags work good for me too. The factory mags are probably made by one of those companies.

Clean it good. Oil it dry. Use a little gun grease on moving parts.

To reinforce the wisdom of other posters

The big thing is to take some serious, quality practice time.

A lot of guys jump into add-ons and so on thinking the accuracy will just automatically happen.

Practice, then make thoughtful decisions.

Will do. Taking all sorts of different types of ammo.

Guys I wont really be into modding this pistol. I'm accumulating a large military surplus rifle collection, and I figure a brand new replica of the original 1911 would be pretty sweet and complement my collection although I will shoot this pistol A LOT. I will shoot it first and see how she operates, then if things need polishing or smoothing out I will do that later. Thank's for the replies guys. Going to buy it monday and I will follow up with pictures.

Start with FMJ, run a few hundred rounds through it, THEN try JHP.

You'll love it I have wanted a 1911 since I was a teenager and now that I have my GI .45 it is my favorite handgun to go out and plink with.

The only thing you'll need to know/do is where to get more ammo!

H*ll, roll your own. It's fun to work with the varieties you can come up with just to see what works and what doesn't. Plus you won't have to 'hunt' for ammo; ya get to hunt for primwrs, powder, and bullts instead...But it's still fun.

+1 that what I do it keeps the cost down a bit on my 1911's appetite for bullets primers and powder.

After I shoot it I'll have a set of dies coming. I only have 300 federal large pistol match primers left... that wont last long. lol

I couldn't wait til monday.

When I got it home I noticed a huge burr in the crown.... like a ridge... didn't even look like a burr. I don't know if they use rifling buttons on the barrels at springfield but I took some 400 grit, and worked it down then polished it out with 600 grit. After that I slapped on some cold blue. The gouge or burr or whatever it was is gone. If it don't hit the broad side of a barn then what ever.... there are ed brown target barrels.

My only real gripe with my GI is the sights. Accuracy is actually pretty good considering it cost less than half what I paid for my Kimbers. Reliability has always been excellent.
