I think you are right. The Hi-Power has it but the Luger is a very close second.
1911 are simply supposed to be .45 acp, any other caliber su*ks.
I'd take a Jimenez before I'd waste my money on a Glock...and I have a terrible opinion of Jimenez.

lol about the Glock thing I was at a Shipton's Big R in Sheridan, Wyo and I was just browsin the guns and cleaning supplies. Some guy was talkin to the counter help about guns and all that and was inquiring about the ARs and then he kinda goes towards one of the other guys. Well these guys were kind of d***heads about just about everything. Seemed to think their shiesa didn't stink. I was asking them about different guns and their prices for ARs, SKS(they didn't have or had ever stocked), a $750 WASR10, and M1s/M14. Their price for the AR even their cheapest one was like $1500, for an M1 even a cheap service grade was $1300 which they didn't have in stock, for an M14 they wanted something ridiculous something around $1800. I got kinda pisst about that and then asked about a bolt action .22 S-L-LR or .22mag or a .223 just a standard tube fed or clip or blind mag fed. Their cheapest one of any of those was $600. Just plain pissed me off. So I went back to lookin at the cleaning stuff and whatnot and then that other dingle berry waltzes up to the counter and is talkin pistols with this retard counter-helper and goes "Ok...they must be hiding from me..where are the Glocks?" The counter help says the one intelligent/true thing that entire time...he says "Glocks aren't so popular around here." Dill-weed The Shopper then asks him "Why not??" I didn't let the Tard answer this one. I calmly said from around the corner "Cause they're ugly...plain and simple."

Moral of the story...home-town gunshops are awesome. These guys are retarded and I despise them. I'll gladly pay $13/box of PMC 9mm here in town than shop there again. They didn't seem to keen on trying to sell me anything, just flaunting their gunrack that I haven't seen change in between then and the previous time which was easily 3 months prior.

The best thing about the internet is that you don't have to go to gun shops or gun shows. You can get your ammo and accessories from Midway or any number of suppliers without having to deal with Gun Snobs and Wonks.

As far as the High Power is concerned, it's very pretty, and a good solid gun. But I'm not paying 700-800 bucks for a gun that has 1970's options, when the same money puts your mitts on a Kimber that comes with all the features you would want to add to the Browning for hundreds of dollars more.

I go to the big stores to browse and do the touchy-feely thing. I seldom buy from them. I use small gun shops and have them order what I want after fingering the big store stuff. I simply get a better price.
Yeah, I've had situations where I just couldn't keep my mouth shut...lol
You're right, you pay a good price for a Hi-Power but, like the 1911, you have a great gun and history. Sorta akin to the S&W Model 41...the best target .22 out there but woohoo what a heafty price thay have now.
I've read so many hard luck stories about Kimber I would be hesitant to buy one. Anyway, it's more fun to 'do the work yourself'.

thats is the great thing about the hi power, you dont need to add anything to it. as a bonus, they run right out of the box.

Well I'm sort of sitting on a fence here. My 9mm is a FN Hi Power, but my SIG P229 in .40 S&W will outshoot the heck out of it, and they do make it in 9mm, too.

i used to compete using hi pows, i don't even shoot them any more, way to many choices that are better (for me personally ). i am old, but appreciate some of the new materials and saftey choices available now.
9mm is my favorite, currently, for range shooting i prefer the xdm.
good luck in your choice, and if money is important, most people seem to be happier if they wait until they can afford what they really want.

My list of best 9mm
1. CZ-75
2.Berretta or taraus
3. Sig
4. Hi power
5. Ruger
6. Luger
I have owned 5 out of 6 on my list only the CZ have I not owned but all the "experts" say its the best. This list goes by how well they work, not by how cool they are.

Yeah, I was wondering what you'd add to a Hi-Power, but all I can think of are better sights and an extended safety-but those are factory options now.

Exclamation Hi-Power 9mm or 1911 .45?

When my GF and I first got together, she asked if she could keep her handgun at my house. She had seen my 1911 .45, and said hers looked like it, but she thought hers was 'smaller'. She brought it, and it was/is a FN Browning Hi-Power 9mm. We take both of them to the range to practice, and she is a very good shot. I like the heft of the FN almost as much as the 1911. ...We are well-defended at home, where we keep them both loaded with HPs. (Back-up is a Win 97 pump.)

Hi Powers are without a doubt, excellent guns. I want to get hold of a Hi Power, that would be awesome. But we shall see. Gun shows coming up too, so it is a possibility. I am quite partial to the 1911 design. I have two of them, and the first gun I ever owned was a 1911. I know they can be made in 9mm, and I imagine they would be very fun to shoot. I have never shot a Glock, so I can't vouch for anything with one of those. I have held one maybe, but just don't have any real desire to buy a Glock. If someone gave it to me, then hell yea, I'd keep it. They are just too boxy for me. Hi Power and 1911 have a nice thin sleek design. I like that. I would definitely prefer a Hi Power over a Glock, in any caliber.

Thumbs up

I've shot a lot of the pistols mentioned here and most are OK. However I am Very one sided in my opinion of what is the best of ALL!
I have owned Hi-Powers since the early 60s and have carried one in combat.
There is Not a single pistol in the world today that I would trade my 60s vintage military contract HP for!!!
I do Not consider double action to be of any particular value so not having it on my HP is not a detriment! Yes there are a few pistols with larger mag capacity, but not by much. My Inglis 14 rd mags were easily modified to 15 rd
and I have a couple of Argentine 17 rd mags, And one 21 rd mag.
The 21 rder Is my go to denver mag because they limit their inmates to 10 rds in rifle or pistol. I also often carry my CAR 15 with a 40 rd mag on those trips.

I don't know about "THE" best 9mm, but it ranks pretty high. I carried a Mk II Hi Power as a back up for a couple of years. Loved it. Sold it to get a Glock. Love that too. I have to sell a toy to get a toy most of the time. Both are great guns. Most guys who love the 1911, love the way it feels in your hand, old slabsides. The Browning is the same way for me. Glock and Browning are both great, but each one has it's own charactaristics that make it great. If you get a Browning Hi Power, get a mark 2 or Mark 3. The ambi safety and grips really make a difference. You can't go wrong with a lot of 9mm out there. I'm glad no one has brought up the Hi Point yet...crap, I just did.

I own a Glock 27 (.40 S&W), a FN HP with early German markings, and an Inglis with the holster/stock. They all fit my hand well and shoot well. I have the shakes so bad that I can not fire aimed fire, but I point shoot great. I do not worry about mag. capacity because I have several spares including a 20 rd for the Glock and a 30 rd for the Inglis and HP.
Which is best I can not say. It is a matter of if it feels "right" in your hand and the style you prefer.
I have never had a malfunction with any of these pistols. I doubt that anyone with a 1911 that has fired as many rounds as I have, 10'000+, can say that.

It is a wise man that knows his limitations!

I love mine. Is it the "best" 9mm? Maybe not but it is one fine weapon.
