Thumbs up

flattopnut...No doubt you had lots of fun harvesting that bird. I've tried two years and still haven't gotten close enough yet. I've heard them, seen them at a distance, but never within range.

Tell us about your gun, shells used, and the stragedy you used. What time of day, etc.

Thanks,

Ox

A few questions about turkey hunting.

1) Where are you located? I am in Mount Airy, NC and very close to Virginia.

2) Why do you shoot turkeys with shotguns? I have seen them at a distance and I want to shoot them with my 17 Mach II, is that recommendable?

3) If you are close to me can we go sometime?

The whole point of spring turkey season is to bring them in close. The shotgun works best in this type of situation. I'm not sure if it's still the case, but you could not shoot a turkey with a rifle during spring gobbler season.

And if you are going to shoot a turkey with a rifle, you need to make a head shot. You'll destroy a lot of good eating if you make a body shot on any bird with a rifle.

So, if you shoot it with a shotgun it doesn't ruin the meat? How so? Do the pellets just bounce off it? Just the force of the pellets enough to kill it? I shoot rabbits in the head out to 150 yards with my Mach II, shot one Saturday and one Friday in the backyard. There is a big one in my mom's boyfriend's backyard that I want to snag sometime. I do not have a shotgun and won't be getting one for some time to come. I have a few other guns I want to buy first.

You use a extra-full choke, so the shotwad is very small. You then aim (most turkey shotguns have rifle sites or a scope) at the neck/head region. Exact aiming points are argued, I personally aim about 2/3rds of the way up the neck, if it's at longer yardages I aim at the head. You also use a "turkey" load, a high brass magnum in #4,5,6 shot. I use a 31/2" 12G. BTW Turkeys are shot on the ground, not wingshot like other birds.

MuShu Gorden I don't know about your state but it's illegal to hunt turkey with any kind of rifle in mine.
You better check your laws. What do you do with the Rabbits you shoot ?...A.H

Oh, I need to check my laws here then. I "give" the rabbits to that bird that comes and eats whatever is in my backyard. It is either a hawk or a falcon but he visits my house quite regularly and whatever is shot does not last longer than a few hours in my field before it is eaten or carried off by mr. bird of prey. I just pick them up, take them to the middle of the field, drop them off, then go about my day. Then, I check later to see if they are there and I have never seen the animal there after a few hours.

The gun is a Benelli Nova 12 gauge, I use #4 or #5 3" Federals, a .655 H.S. Strut Undertaker choke. I called to this bird on the roost at dawn but he flew down and moved away from me. I kept him in sight in a pasture and kept sneaking closer for about 5 hours. I finally got between him and some hens, gave him one soft yelp series and he almost sat in my lap, shot at 10 yards at about 12:30 .

1. Im located in Chatham county NC and hunt NC and Craig county Virginia.
2. This bird was taken in NC, rifles not allowed. I have killed one in VA with a rifle but personally that is no way to take a bird. Id rather call him in. But a rifle is effective just be VERY safe about it.
3. Ill be headed up you way next spring, remind me. I was in Mount Airy last Saturday at the Snappy Lunch......guess what I had?????

MUSHU you need to be shooting targets instead of rabbits if your not going to eat them.
The anti-gun turds and the animal rights people love slobs like you that shoot game animals just to kill them and waist them.

You need to rethink your bad habit...A.H

You sure do travel a while a way to hunt there flattopnut. So, you shoot them in the head? How does the head stay in tact then? Wouldn't a shotgun blast kind of "take it off?" I would love to shoot a turkey and be able to eat it actually.

And Mr. ArkansasHunter. I may not be eating said rabbit but I do not overly kill them (I have killed 3 in my lifetime) so I do not think that that is too bad and that raptor comes and picks them up so I can justify it that way.

Also, you seem to have quite a few posts on this here website so I can assume that you are quite respected and honored when you post in a topic. However, if I was to kill a opossum would I be expected to eat it? What about a snake or spider? I am in the process of joining the NAVY with hopes of serving my country like my grandfather in World War II and become a SEAL (he was Army/Air Force). Now, let's say that I must kill a man one day in the field, am I supposed to eat him because the pacifists and anti-war nuts want me to?

I respect what you have to say but I must say that there is always someone that disagrees with something another person does. Whether it is some green loving tree hugging person who hates my car for having 2 turbo chargers that dump tons of CO2 into the air or some anti-gun nut who doesn't want Fluffy to get killed someone is always going to disagree with it.

Now, I respect what you have to say and I am not going to say anything negative towards you about what you think is right or wrong.

Thank you for your post good sir and I hope that you have a great evening.
