SHTF fiction novels

Does anyone know of good and realistic SHTF fiction novels to read when I am killing time? I welcome your suggestions

I just finished reading One Second After, by William Forstchen. It's about teotwaki caused by EMP attack. Mass starvation, canabalism, war, and other scary stuff.

Alas Babylon is a good one. It is set in the 50's but it is still a good read about living after the SHTF.

If you don't mind reading graphic novels "V for Vendetta," is a great book. It is also one of the most realistic. It takes place in the near future in a dystopian big brother type society in England. People's rights have been taken away and the government runs everything. A lot like 1984 in some aspects.

The characters are great, the story is great, and this is what I would consider perhaps what would happen when the powerful nations survive a world wide SHTF scenario.

If WWIII happens soon and the Earth is half destroyed because of it and we survive (well some of us that is) I could see the government stepping in and doing something like for our own safety.

Lucifer's Hammer is the standard by which such books are to be judged.

The Road is an excellent read, though bleak (all McCarthy is bleak), but don't look to it for survival pointers.

Heck just go play Fallout 3 the video game. It is all about post nuclear fallout/apocalypse and it is a great game. All sorts of neat stuff you can do, and you can be very evil or a good two shoes.

Forgive me for promotion, but A Matter of Timing and its sequel, The Cataclysm Scroll are both novels about realistic SHTF in a not-too-distant future. The last in the trilogy, "Killing the Eagle", is about half complete. Sneak previews, cheap places to buy'em online and reviews at The New Madrid Trilogy Home Page
Hope you enjoy. Many forum members have.

Yup. Lucifers hammer is the best and the Road is excellent. But don't forget Farnam's Freehold by Robert Heinlein.

British fantasy novelist David Gemmel had a series of post appocalyptic novels where a travelling preacher armed with black powder weapons did battle with the forces of evil. Can't remember the name, but they were good reads.

Another Heinlein that is only TEOTWAWKI for the participants is Tunnel in the Sky. It raises many good questions about what happens after the event that triggers the catastrophe to those who survive it; and how and what kind of society they will build.

The Stand by Stephen King, one of my all time favorite "disaster novels".
