Actually you couldn't be more wrong. Silver, Gold, Food, Guns, Steel, Lead all things will have intrinsic value when paper money is worth...paper. Silver and Gold will be like the new currency having stored or potential value. Food Guns Steel Lead will have real value. If someone has food and you want it but you have nothing they want they would gladly accept gold or silver in trade because they could then take the gold or silver to someone with something they want. There has been currency as long as there has been man.

I would be if I had any spare money. As it is, I keep my eyes open at estate sales for small bits of 18K gold or sterling and pick them up when I can. Afther the SHTF I suspect what the worth will be will depend on weight, not face value of a coin.

There seem to be two big approaches to investing in the metals:
1) Hedge against inflation
2) Some form of currency in a SHTF scenario

I'd say so far we're touching on both.

Are you talking about .999 silver rounds? Or are you talking about old pre-1965 US currency coins? Old currency coins are only 90% silver, not pure. But they're still very much worth stockpiling!

I tend to put any extra into bullets, ammo, powder, primers, and guns. IF SHTF, those things will be in demand IMHO. And for now at least, they're cheaper than gold or silver.

I think you are better off buying silver for a SHTF situation for general trade. Gold is great but it is too valuable in the available normal denominations. If you are stockpiling (okay, "investing"), gold bullion, then I think it is generally for a more stable political time where inflation is out of control and you need it for larger purchases. Essentially, it is a time when govenment is still functioning and you need a stable currency; Argentina comes to mind.

I can see it.... trading for two loaves of fresh bread.... you have change for a one ounce gold coin? Maybe ammuntion may work better for the small stuff.

I like silver because it is less valuable at the silver dollar denomination. You can't beat American Eagles. This is to spend eventually for the most part.

I was thinking about picking up a couple bags of junk silver and splitting one of my investments to buy 1/10 ounce gold coins. I have been sitting on it too long I'ts crunch time.

The thing about SHTF scenarios and precious metals is that they wont be considered currency for awhile.

First and foremost, people will be more concerned about bullets, beans, and band aids. The tangible stuff that gets you by until tomorrow.

I prep for a SHTF scenario that may last years. If that scenario does happen, it will only be after the weaker of us are long gone and small communities have been established. Eventually those communities will start trading. But even then, I'd bet a dollar to a dog terd that the emphasis will be in bullets beans and band aids.

I buy silver as gold is waaaay out of my price range now. I prefer the 1 oz blocks, but theres really no reason for that. But only so much silver can go in my BOB.

One thing about precious metals, you can bury it and come back for it later. No reason to carry the whole bank around with you unless you don't intend to come back.

Silver and gold will be more useful in a currency/market crash/financial crisis scenario, rather than a SHTF scenario. Which, IMO is actually more likely than SHTF. At least that's the direction our gooberment has been merrily skipping towards for many, many years. It would take a lot to send the human race back to savages.

Actually, Mike, pennies that are 1982 and earlier are pure copper, and worth saving just for the copper value alone. Newer than 1982 are copper-plated zinc, and aren't worth anything, other than 1 cent.
