Hello, just inherited an sks last week. Was finding out all I could about them online and stumbled on this forum and have been reading all the old threads for the past couple days. As seems to be mandatory when someone buys a new sks, here are some pics. One thing I think is strange, is that on yooper john's website it says that the last five digits will be stamped on the gun, and mine is the last six. I took a pic of the butt because thats the easy to see, but its the same on the trigger gaurd, receiver, bolt and everywhere else the number is, six digits.
The importer marks are hard to read in the pic but say : sks7.62x39 MADE IN CHINA BY NORINCO CSI ONT CA the number in the triangle is hard to read but i would guess /485\ range report: shoots like a dream and eats ammo like crazy. Was hitting nickels from 25 yards after several tries. Pie plate from 50 yards, but I think its more my fault then the guns. hard to stop shooting, it ate 100 rounds first time i was out, 100 more second time.
Now for my question : Will this muzzle break work on my norinco? I should just need to have a gunsmith thread the end of my barrel in the same pitch as the yugos, right? Only problem I can forsee is that I only have maybe 3/4" from end of barrel to front sight, how much do you need to screw it in? Anyone have one of these? Experience any smaller groups with it? I'd say look at the website I posted and look for one of the ones that goes around your front sight and pins on. Some people here have had decent luck with them.

SKS's don't kick hard enough to need a muzzle brake.
I honestly think that depends on what you bought it for.
I own an SKS myself, and it wasn't purchased to be a "competition" or "hunting" rifle, as there are far better rifles to be had at a comparable price, if used for such purposes. For range-time fun with a large mag, there's the 10/22...and if you're looking for a hunting rifle for deer season, you can go to Wal-Mart and buy a decent rifle right off the shelf that is better suited.
An SKS had but one purpose in mind, when it was designed. I'm not saying that they aren't used for hunting, range fun, or even long-range accuracy competitions...I'm merely stating that, at the time of its design, it was built as a military rifle. Nothing more and nothing less. As such, it was designed to send multiple rounds toward the enemy, for the purpose of killing the enemy.
Even though the sevensixtwo isn't big enough to "need" a muzzle brake, muzzle brakes also serve but one purpose...which is to reduce recoil. The purpose of recoil reduction on a military rifle is NOT for comfort of the shooter, but to reduce the amount of time necessary to regain your sights on the target (or for that matter, to move on to the next target).
As such, reduction of recoil is a definite benefit, if you purchased such a rifle in order to be prepared for WTSHTF scenarios. Mine was just kinda left at my house by a family member, but the mag is still loaded "just in case".
My AR15 produces even far less recoil, and yet, I still fully intend to add a muzzle brake to it as soon as the parts for my lathe come in...even though the only headshots I'll likely ever take with it are going to be directed toward Bambi (and possibly, her grandfather).
In short, the 7.62 round doesn't "need" a muzzle brake...but for that matter, we really don't "need" a 7.62 rifle to begin with, now do we? Just my two cents...
Welcome to g&g dark! Lots of good folk here. They are right ,the SKS doesnt really need a brake. That doesnt mean that I dont want one just for visual appeal.

But if we didnt have 7.62 rifles we wouldnt have the .308 (7.62x51), I think the matter of a muzzle brake on the SKS or any other smaller caliber rifle is a matter of personal preference. This is turning into an interesting thread, I enjoy getting others POV.

We also wouldn't have the .30-06 either... Its a 7.62x63mm

So if you wanted a black rifle you could mod to heart's content, you should have gotten a black rifle.
But hey, it's your rifle. Do what you like. You only have to please yourself.
Yeah true but as it is I probably won't get a muzzle break for it. Its just one of those things where OOOH I want it...until you get it and then its like oh wow...I hate this.
