Trouble sighting in AP4, 308

Shooting Remington 308, 150 gr, ammo. I shot at 25 yards, 50 yards, and 100 yards. 25 yards was about 2 inches low and 3 inches left, nice group. 50 yards was left and pretty close to perfect elevation, even with bullseye. 100 yards was left and about 1-2 inches low. I moved right and up and got a perfect 1/2" 3 shot group in bullseye at 25 yards. Skipped 50 yards and shot at bull on 100 yard target. Bullet impact was about 12" high of bull but centered left to right. By the way I'm just using standard iron sights that came with the gun. I turned front sight about a turn and a half back up and shot at 100 yards again. Now it is about 6" high from bull. Could it just be the barrel got hot and shifted point of impact, although it is free-floated? Any thoughts on this? Aint got too much ammo, somebody keeps buying it up before I get there!

It's probably not the barrel heating up.

With the 308 ballistics, if you are dead center at 25 yards, you will be about 6-7 inches high at 100 and dead on again at 300. Make sure you are also obtaining the same sight picture. If you change anything in how you acquire your target between 25 and 100 it will make a huge difference in bullet impact.

How many groups were you shooting before changing the sight elevation each time?

I shot a 3-4 shot group at each range, 25,50, and 100 then adjusted sights, it took a couple of groups at 25 yards to get it dead center on the bull. I then shot at 100 and got hole off the target. I have been shooting peep sights for quit some time and feel if it was me it would at least be on the paper, maybe not, this gun IS pretty short. I also found out later I was using the small aperture and should have used the large aperture for under 200 meters. Never had a choice in aperture sizes before, M1 Garand and M1A. I will repeat sight-in tomorrow taking care to rest gun more accurately and using large aperture. I'm sure its just something I'm overlooking. I want to use this for deer hunting in my nephews swampland so I'm going to sight it in for dead-on to an inch or 2 low at 25 yards then.
The longest shot I'm anticipating is about 100 yards.

Yeah, they're a little different animal from the Garand it takes a bit to get fully comfortable with the collapsible stock and iron sights on the shorter radius.

Well....sorry for the delay, I sighted it in again using the correct aperture and I am totally delighted with this rifle! Sorry for being an idiot but I do have a brain fart once in awhile...sigh. Got to read the manual BEFORE shooting new gun. Thanks for the replies DPMS, all is right with the world again.
