That did not detour me from putting on the camo bibs, grabbing the .22wmr and heading into some timber.
All I got was moist! Actually it was just an excuse to go be nosey in our new deer hunting area! Wandered around, and about the time I found a great squirrel spot... it really started raining.... SAW some BIG deer tracks, found some hot trails, some acorn forage areas! I know where I am setting up some various ground blinds and found an awesome hill with acrons everywhere... "Ethel" my doe decoy I believe will find a nice spot on the hill and hopefully will bring in some nice suitors! LOL
So,..... NO squirrels! ALOT of foliage still on trees anyway. However, I could care less, I just love being out and enjoying the spirit of the wild! Getting something tastey for the pot is always just a bonus in my book!
Anybody do any good?

It starts pretty early here. Personally, I think its easier to skin one thats put on more winter fat and a heckuva lot easier to see in October when the leaves are down! Good fun though, its great for teaching young hunters because its still warm enough, and you have to be super patient and wait for them to show themselves. Its good prep before starting out in a deer stand! Plus those young eyes can usually spot em' easier! LOL

I'll be heading out with my .22 next weekend since thats the first chance I will have. I'm thinking about trying with my .22 revolver as well for a little extra challenge. I'm usually too obsessed with deer hunting after october 1 to mess with squirrels.
Were not even close to squirrel season here yet. As a rule we stay out of our woods until squirrel season and while hunting we look at signs.
Since I'm hunt on land that I've hunted on for years it seems Squirrel and especialy Deer are always where there always at.
It's not much of a challenge but it is so nice to be out in the woods and carrying one of my guns.
A pleasure I have yet to find words for.
My choice of gun will 1st. be my new Pardner pump 20ga and then I still need to experiment with different chokes in my Mossberg 930 semi-auto 12ga. with 24" barrel and then I'll take out my hunting buddy which is an 870 Express in 12ga.
If nothing keeps me from it, I've got 2 new Marlin 22 boltaction rifles that are trien to bust open the doors of my gun cabinet to go Squirrel hunting, so they'll get there chance when the leaves are off the tree's.
For the past 3 years something has happened to keep me out of the woods as much as I wanted to be, so I hope this season I can be where I'm most happy at...A.H

Even though I'm an IL resident, I've never hunted them here. I have access to 1000's of acres in Wisconsin and have always hunted them up there (I'm 2 miles from the state line)..
Season up there isn't until the first weekend of September, but I usually don't go out until we get a frost and get a few leaves off the trees, and I usually do most of my squirrel hunting in December.. Long range .22 shots or occasionally my .32 muzzle loader..
My favorite way to have squirrel is I pressure cook them for about 20 minutes (usually 3 or so at a time) and let them cool a bit.. Then I pull the meat from the bones and cook up some brown gravy and toss it over noodles..
I had the flu on the 1st but i still went out and came home empty handed i heard one but with all the dense folage i could find him before he got away but ill get him sooner or later. i prefer my pardner single shot 20g
lol i like the contest idea but i think the seasons harvest sits at zero so far for the state lol i know a sozen squirrel hunters all have nothing to show for it yet guess we will have to keep trying
AH- Alot of that generic Walmart Great Value label stuff is pretty good, my family actually likes many of their stuff over name brand. Havent tried their grits yet, usually only order grits if I'm having breakfast out somewhere.

LOL I don't know about in the woods, but they're really cutting heck out of the trees in my yard.Cuttings laying on the ground every where.Getting ready for a hard winter?
2ND outting this afternoon.... Heard some bushy tailed nut thieves but leaves still so thick came home empty.
Although I must add that I was really just being nosey around my deer hunting ground and moving and setting up new ground blinds LOL
Pretty much just hauled the .22 for nothin'... although I really dont much care if I get to shoot anymore, I just like being out... plus dont have to deep clean the rifle LOL
Glad I ain't got money riding on my squirrel huntin' so far this season~

I tried to go out early on sunday morning which was blistering hot. I couldn't even get into to my land though there are cattle on it right now, and two not so friendly bulls. The cows thought I was bringing them food and wouldn't even let me through the gate.
