what could you do

what could you do??? your off on a family vacation somewhere when the SHTF, and you are along way from the survival gear. what could you do to survive and perhaps make it back to retrieve your full kit???

this was inspired by In the Year Zero, early 60's atomic war movie. in it Ray Milland and family are off vacationing when the war starts and they got to make it back to saftey.

The Year Zero, wasn't that that one where they had the trailer and they turned around headed for the hills? They moved into a cave or something like that. Good movie if I am remembering the right one.

If there were to be a SHTF situation and we were away, I would have to think long and hard about returning home to get supplies. I guess it would depend on what weapons I would have or could get and what supplies I could scavenge along the way. I can’t imagine that my supplies would be here too long if I did not get back to them pretty quickly. I guess it would depend on the situation if I would go back.

I would have adequate firearms on me (always bring a few) and most of my vacations are to relatives homes (who would have supplies and weapons) or near my own.

It never hurts to have a 3-day grab and go bag.

This also underscores the need to have your retreat/bunker/bug-in house, etc ABSOLUTELY ready so that when you did get back you could transition into survival mode. When the SHTF and you're already a few days late it's too late to read the manual and assemble the tools!

no matter where i go my urban bob comes with me... a handgun comes as well...

in this situation i would have to think if it would be worth going home for the rest of my supplies or gear. if it would be i would scavange as much stuff together in order to get me and my family home to our gear...

I only vacation to my BOL.
(yeah right. in this scenario I'd go to my uncles place, he's got more guns than the local national guard armory.)

I have a three day pack in the Jeep. I would enhance it and take it with me. If I throw in the battle pack, I'll have a two week supply. It's marine digital, it will be out of sight. Gotta keep stuff scattered like squirrels. I keep four gals on water in the Jeep and my hydrators full. I'll take my special Dewalt drill with me too.

What's this "vacation" thing everyone is talking about? Since my wife left, I haven't really traveled anywhere except to Richmond for a shooting competition. Obviously, I brought several firearms with me then. I think I will be heading out somewhere at some point doing something not firearms related, I think I'll just bring my 1911 and Mini-14 and leave it at that.

I have made it a habit to bring some kind of defensive firearm with me when traveling out of area (generally secured and unloaded mind you, legalities :P) but as for having supplies handy, that could be a hard one. I don't own anything that can move a trailer, but there is always food and water on hand (at least a case of water bottles and sufficient road food for a few days). Now if I was actually camping, that would be a different story, I am ususally set for at least a week, more if I tried. As well as having a backup firearm and ammo for a just-in-case situation (but the JIC situatio is usually that someone forgot to pack their ammo!)

Just be ready to adapt, improvise, and overcome. 90% of survival is mindset and skills rather than how much stuff you have.

This may gross you out (so to say)

plus it may offend your morals to the max, but we must get realistic based on what we have learned from Katrina and other world disasters.

In a true breakdown of society you must realize how quickly food will disappear.
Those who live the longest will be the first to kill and cook their fellow humans. It is a moral decision each person will have to make.

it will take the same room for smokeless powder primers bullets as for blackpowder stuff .
and if it gets as bad as you have to make your powder the time is over

but in real world situation, say you take the family to Disney World. you, wife, little Johnny, and little Susie have flown to Fla. you haven't got squats, and you gotta get out fast. i would forsee much difficuty securing transportation, some how acquiring a weapon(s), finding the least traveled road. perhaps the cyber links to ATM's and C/C accounts may be down something that anymore is a neccessity.

I bought as some here well know a Maverick 88 pump shotgun with 18.5" barrel for when my wife and I go off somewhere... It goes to.
If we went on a vaction and drove it will be with us as well as my only carry pistol.

Another thing I have is a tactical type case for this short shotgun that has 2 outter zippered compartments.
I can carry 10 total 5 round box's of 3" mag. 00 buck. I have an elastic sleeve on the butt that holds 5 rounds of shells. Plus a full magazine.

Thats about the best we can do as far as protection, off somewhere, if a SHFT were to happen.

You'd just be screwed. In a real SHTF situation, there won't BE any transportation, electricity, gasoline, etc. It'll turn to savagery very quickly.
