Been in So. California for 60+ years and spent as much time in the water as I could; surfing, skin/scuba diving, fishing, boating, and just getting wet. I went to Catalina Island many times on my boat and fished/swam all around the island. I swam with blue sharks, but not on purpose. I cannot remember one shark attack locally. We've got big Blues, Leopard, Thrasher, and a rare Great White. I guess they just don't like those "left coast liberals"! I've been "attacked" by sea lions a few times though.

If you could see all the sharks that are in the water with you, you would shit! a real good way to see sharks is go to a popular scuba diving reef and quietly follow some scuba divers while snorkling on the surface. you will see sharks come and check them out and go away. most of the time the scuba divers never even see one shark when they were checked out by 5-6

The only place I've ever gotten in the ocean at was off the coast of Thailand. Mainly Phi Phi Island, off the coast of Phuket. I went snorkeling a good way out and rented a boat to take us out to several different reef edges. As far as I know, the most dangerous thing I ran into was a large eel.

If I was to run into a shark, I think I'd have to give up pond swimming too!!!!
