How mutch flogging would be incured by wanting to sporterise a K31?

Depends on who you talk to.
If the gun is already beat up, you won't hear to much about it, but if it looks close to pristine, then you'll catch alot more slack.
But in the end, it's your gun and you can do whatever makes you happy.
No, I was thinking if I could find a rough one or re barreling it to a 45acp. Have never seen one rough enough to ,merit re barreling it though.

Well, I don't know why you'd want to. They are already known to be one of the most accurate milsurp rifles anyways. The only thing I might think sporterizing would do is get rid of 1 or 2 lbs of the handguard and fore end of the stock? I suppose if the stock is just chewed up or a little rotten, then you may as well, and see if you could find a new stock for it if you desired it. But I can't see a reason to sporterize one. The rifle is yours, and ultimately you can do to it what you want. Its my personal opinion I do not permanently modify any of my milsurp rifles. For one, I don't like to, and for two, if you cut the stock or drill and tap the receiver it loses its C&R status.

Please please please please don't do it!It would be doing a great disrespect to that beautiful piece of Swiss engineering.I can hear my K31 screaming in the gun safe as I type this post.

Well as for losing it's c&r status that depends on what ATF agent you talk to.

My brother bought one of those enfield conversions from Specialty Interest Arms, I think it is neat but don't care for the turn bolt design, Supposedly the action will not handle a 308 which is what I would really like to use, I don't have the equipment or expertise to machine my own copy of a k31 reciever and bolt. Really I wouldn't do it unless I found one that was totallt shot out and needed a new barrel anyway.

I believe the action will handle a .308 because they have been chambered in .308, same action!! I have seen them on gunbroker factory original, and they have talked about them on the swissrifles forum.

Your right the K31's as well as the 1911's can handle the308. In the past this was done because finding 7.5x55 was very difficult. The pic of the K31 in my previous post was built by a gunsmith on the eastcoast,I looked into doing this a few years back but its just to much money. I can buy a new Savage target rifle for a good bit less. It is interesting though.

The size and wieght would make me consider replacing the stock to make it lighter, but why chop down a nice rifle when cheaper modern ones are available... or mausers can be had for very low prices that noo one would care about chopping up?
I would recommend buying a sporter stock for it, keeping the original stock . Buying a clamp on scope mount , and use that for hunting or the like. That way , when the time comes when you want to resell it, its all original.
Some early Swiss rifles and carbines were imported and rechambered to 308 in the 60's. I have shot one made in 1899 and it was nuts on. You see them on gun broker sometimes refered to as an Alpine Swiss.

There are two companies making sporter stocks for the K31. Use a clamp on mount. You can buy clamp on muzzle brakes, diopter sights $$$. The rifle shoots moa in military trim, why devalue it with sporterizing. You can buy a civilian model, $$$$.
