No it's not!

I've never shot a 870 or 870 express, but I'm more than happy with my 500.

I have both and would have to say I like the 870 seems to be built stronger.
I wish the 500 had a sturdier front forearm and a lower profile forearm. I like where the 500 safety is located but its look really cheap and bulky with the plastic safety I wish the safety was more like my browning BPS.

I have both - 2 870s and 3 500s. One of the 870s was made in the early 50s and the other in the 70s. Fit and finish on the early one is much better than on the other. The 500s are late 60s, mid 80s and around 2000. All of these are close to the same for fit and finish. The oldest 500 is a slug gun - 24" smooth bore with a scope mounted on the receiver. I used a one piece base and custom fitted to the receiver and attached with 8 screws and loc-tite - never had it come loose and shoots great. So, guess my answer is both are good and will last a long time given routine care.

My choice is the 870 it's the better pump shotgun. Steel reciever, better wood stocks simpler to take down and put back together.
Whats interesting is you hardly ever see a Mossberg firearm in my area and I don't know anyone that owns a Mossberg.
Yet it seems everybody has an 870.

I own a Maverick which is owned by Mossberg and I can't find anything wrong with it other than the safty sucks and the trigger group is some kind of plastic and the reciever is aluminum.

To some it up I think the 870 is a better built shotgun but the Mossberg is just as reliable.

hands down the 870. i own the remington and have shto the mossy many times. i dont know if it is possible to shoot a 870 into the ground. u have put thousands and thousands and thousands of rounds thru mine and have never had a problem. i do not like the mossy because of the awkward safety and the qualty does not seem as good as the 870. also if u want to alter the gun in any way like stocks or rails the 870 is the way to go.but the most important thing is fit. shat specific type of 870 are you looking for

I've seen both, side by side, in the rain and snow and mud of duck hunting and the 870's consistently jam when filled with muddy water, 500's do not, ever. I actually like the 870 set up better and they are GREAT field guns, but in harsh environments, I put my money on mossberg every time.

Besides, whom does the military trust?

The 870 I have now and owned before were a lot quieter, they have steel receivers versus aluminum in the 500, and I can add capacity fairly easily to the 870 with a tube extender versus having to remove the tube on the 500 and getting a new barrel and tube if I want more shots. Reliability wise, they're about the same from my experience.

What he said. I'd be more emphatic about the safety, however. I have never liked safeties in the vicinity of the trigger guard. I feel it's much more natural and much more sensible to have the safety under your thumb on the tang. It's a lot easier to know whether the safety is on or off that way. Other than that, I don't see there's much to choose between them. Both are fine shotguns.

I grew up shooting Ithaca, Browning, and Winchester shotguns, all of which have a safety on the trigger guard. I'm sold out for Mossberg these days but I REAAAAAALLY want my safety back on my trigger finger. I'm still much more comfortable there. Besides, I can't work the safety on the back of the receiver with a pistol grip on and have my hand in the firing position.
I understand the military style safety. No military rifle I've handled has the safety accessible while your hand is ready to fire, safer I guess, and you can see it engaged or disengaged while aiming, but I'd still rather be able to click it off and fire in a split second with a pistol grip combo on.

I used a Mossberg 500 for awhile but after several misfires and dumping live shells after ejecting traded it in for an 870 and no such problems.

i have both they both have the same reliability but the 870 has a better finish. i prefer the mossy, it's cheaper just as tough as the 870. i really beat up my mossy, and have no regrets. the 870 is still brand new because i want it to look pretty.

i must say, i love the tang safty. and i love the reliability of a mossy.
mossberg ACED the military torture test. it didnt just pass, like the remington. now, there is nothing wrong with the 870, if its what floats your boat.

I have used both. I currently have a older Mossberg 590.
Both are excellent shotguns...other than the price difference I can truly state that the only real difference IMHO is the Remington 870 is prettier.

The M1 Garand, M1 Carbine, and the M14 have the safety accesible by the shooters firing hand (aka: trigger finger).
I noticed you stated 'no military I've handled...'
You need to experience these 3 rifles...Oh yeah!!

My 590 has its safety at the rear of the receiver which is very doable in a shooting position; but I don't have a pistol grip.

The safety selector on the M16 style rifles I don't care for. Like you, I prefer easy access for quicker reaction capability. The only time I ever had my military arm with the safety engaged was on the rifle range; otherwise the safety was off.

I have both and the NEF Parder Pump. I think its pretty much a three way tie. Each has its ups and downs. The Parder is a lil loose compared to the Mossberg and the 870. The Mossberg is very easy to clean. The 870 is by far the easiest to take apart and put back together.
Pick one and buy it. Cant go wrong with any of them other than getting a lemon.

I've handled an M14. Don't remember wher the safety is. Big fan of M1A thoughd. LOVE the M25. . . be still my heart!

They are just classy, but I'll settle for an AR-10, better performance, less weight, HALF the price.

back to shotguns:
I have an 870 hd and a good friend of mine has a 500 persuader. we both have experience shooting our own shotguns, and every time we shoot together, he's constantly fidgeting with his gun while mine works flawlessly. they're both relatively new though, so neither have seen much torture

How about cold weather? Read somewhere your not supposed to lube your gun because the cold causes the lube to coagulate. But I was wondering how reliable either the 870 or the 500 is in weather that's below zero.
