Not to discount the value of "Naval stores" supplied by this great state as one possible source of the "Tar Heel" nick name but the version I heard was that it came from a compliment by a famous southern general who complimented a unit of North Carolina troops for holding their position in the line of battle "like they had tar on their heels". Not that I can offer the least bit of proof to support either one.
