once while looking at emergency shelter sites. one guy endorsed the "pile of leaf's" method. basicaly the lost person would gather up a big pile of leaf's then burrow in for protection. but what about wet leaf's and windy conditions. wouldn't that make things harder to deal???

That sounds like a terrible idea reserved for very bad conditions. Leaves and detritus like to hold on to things like moisture, fungus and biting insects - none of which I want to surround myself with in a survival situation.
Certainly isn't going to help the search and rescue bring your frozen corpse back home any easier!

I'd have to agree with what Metronome said...Go to be something better then leaves. But in an emergency and or desperate situation, I imagine one would try just about anything. And in truth, you'll know soon enough if it was a good idea or not.

For a short term answer, it would be useful to keep you warm and add some protection, but conditions have to be right for a "leaf pile" to help you. It is best to build a little better shelter, but this will work.
Pick up "Tom Brown's Field Guide: Wilderness Survival". It's a nice starting place for techniques for surviving in the wild. Shelter, water, fire, and food with a whole lot of different information on how to acquire the aforementioned.
