Thumbs up Long tail competition

What started as friendly banter in the Illinois section seems to be a fun idea for us Gun & Gamers. We are proposing a longest tail competition for squirrels open to all gun & game members.

We are open to ideas on a prize or some goofy trophy or something.

Rules will be:

Tail must be severed from body... which is what we do cause we win with every squirrel come supper time anyhow.

Tail will be placed over ruler, tape measure or yard stick where we can clearly see the inches in a picture.

Tail is to be measured from the base of the severed bone to the tip of the longest visible hair in the photo... NO long haired hippy squirrel tails allowed LMAO... J/K NO hair weaves or extensions allowed either... however we may allow corn rows or braids as long as it is the squirrels original hair

Squirrels may be taken with either rifle, shotgun, bow or other LEGAL means. Squirrels may NOT be trapped, have their tail removed and released because that would just be weird to see a bunch of no tail having squirrels running about and would probably get some heat from local activists with nothing better to do.

No captive bred super tail squirrels allowed and No altering the original tail to make it longer allowed. If you would not do it to your own tail you cant do it to your entered tail.

Any other ideas on this guys??? Anybody interested???

OH... any variety of legal squirrel game is a legal entry except for Captain Squirrel... I believe he would be upset if we chased him for his tail... however he can fly and does shoot back so perhaps he would be a worthy adversary > ROFLMAO... J/K Rocky... you know your my buddy!

tamalpias, the best Hot-Spots to hunt squirrels are in trees!!! But really any state forest is quite adequate! I also can do a $5 donation or so via PayPal.

^ now that was a golden zinger!

What say we all donate $5 to Gun & Game to support Chris and operating expenses and maybe Chris can have some sort of special online award virtual trophy for our winner? Will see what he says or thinks!

Recipes are great idea too. Squirrel tail soup is a delicacy J/K!!

This will be fun, looking forward to it!

Maybe we will start our own off beat hunting olympic competitions... not your usual boone and crocket club thing!

I would have more success in my buddies front yard in the city than out in my 200 acres of hunting ground LOL! silly tree vermin!

Keep the ideas coming guys, we got plenty of time, lets do it right!

Chasing tail?

Hey, not a bad idea, a little friendly competition to add just a bit of spice to an already most enjoyable pursuit - squirrel hunting! The proposed rules sound fine by me. And, I too will also kick in $5 via PayPal for the prize or prizes that might be determined. (Might I suggest an electronic gift certificate to Cabela's or some other such outfit?)

Any suggestions as to when the competition will begin or end? Squirrel seasons vary from state to state. Some open real soon (if not already open in some locales) and some end pretty late into Winter. May I suggest a definite start and cut off time so those of us with longer seasons don't have a leg up on getting some "trophy" tail to those with shorter seasons - or does anyone really care? Here in NH our squirrel season runs from Sept 1st until Dec 31st.

Oh, and one more thing, should there be a species restriction? Fox squirrel tend to run bigger than Grays (or at least so I am told.) Not everyone has access to Fox Squirrel habitat. But once again, does anyone really care. Just make it a no-holds-barred, fun competition and leave it at that?

Inquiring minds want to know!

It was a great idea Z28! Us Army guys always have good idears! LOL

As far as dates since they do vary by state but since we are looking for the longest tail I really don't think that one state starting a few weeks earlier than another will make much of a difference, if we were going for total tally on how many you could bag that would be a different story! However, I think September 1 would be ok with me or even October if anyone from other states object? Its already in here, but with all the leaves I dont make much of an effort to hunt them LOL!

If we woulda had a biggest cahonies competition I shot one last year that looked like he was smuggling around billiard balls! LMAO

I dont think there should be a species restriction... there are pretty much squirrels all over the country but some areas have only one or the other to my knowledge, we got both here, but the greys are usually smaller (but tastier). Its a friendly for fun type of thing so I vote we have a who cares rule on the species as long as it is a squirrel I suppose.

Squirrel Tail Competitions? I think that should be a new category in Boone and Crockett!
I aint went after tree rats in a couple of years...sounds like a good excuse to get back into it.

All sounds good to me! Will there be a list of participants posted?

I think we should make a list of participants and some sort of tally should be kept. Maybe make a new post called the bushy tail board and we put our entries in that to keep track of em?

Wink

Gotta remember to be PC with squirrels. Winners can be of either sex and preferably dead.

You are absolutely right Oxford!!! We at G & G do NOT descriminate when it comes to shooting squirrels! I see NO color either... red or grey it makes NO difference to me, male or female I equally aim at... LMAO... HA... Ox you've outdone yourself!

As long as they go well with gravy I don't care!!!!

It was suggested that we might make a donation to enable the acquisition of a prize or two for winners, etc. I'd like to donate $5 through PayPal or however it might be most convenient for whomever it is that is going to go to all the trouble of "coordinating" this national event, The First National Long Tail Competition." (Hmmmm....might that be you Cross Hair?)
