I bought my wife a real nice digi-cam for Christmas. You know, one of those that doubles as a digi-cam and a cam-corder. Spent a bunch on it.. We get home and find out that I now have to upgrade my puter by adding a USB port (I only have parallel ports), and I'm finally gonna be forced to upgrade from Win95 to Millenium or XP.
I think it's a big conspiracy between the computer tycoons and the accessory tycoons. Buy the computer before the accessory and then you will have to upgrade. Once try to upgrade you find out that the puter isn't compatible.....and so on and so forth....$$$$$$$$$$

We'll never catch up. What the average guy gets is always going to be behind today's new developmehts. Businesses take advantage of it. We pay for it. Enjoy for a short time and then add to the economy by buying an update tomorrow. (ha) Glad the government doesn't try to regulate that...too.
when you shop for a puter just have this in mind. it's out of date before you buy it. buy the time you get it home they already got a newer model on the shelf.
Yep, bought my new 'puter and thought it was pretty up to date. Then bought some nifty Air Combat Simulator programs - guess what? My video/game card ain't up to what these programs want! Gotta upgrade . . . they won't even install unless I get the new board! They get you goin' and comin'.
my old computer crashed, so i gave it to the tech to upgrade to a new 120gig. but all he could do was put in a cleaned up 8gig hard drive!!! thats the best that could have been done for it!!!
Man 1*, your still running '95??? Holey moley son, come join the modern generation! xp is soooooooooooo different from '95! You'll enjoy it alot more! Still running '95...snicker...snicker...guffaw! Ahem..I mean hope everything works out! (heehee '95!)

Kinda like when albums went away and CD's were all that was left.
But not really.
I sell computers as part of my job, both retail and in businesses. The sad fact is a computer is the most expensive disposable item you will ever purchase.
That being said, you may be better off at this time replacing the whole friggen thing! If you upgrade to XP you may find your processor woefully slow.
For around 800 dollars, give or take, you can assemble a nice powerfull computer. You already have a monitor and keyboard and such, just buy a new tower. (If it is in your budget of course)
If you go the upgrade route with your current puter, you might find you will need to upgrade ram, $40, buy the OS, $290 for an upgrade, 4-500 for the complete program.
You are already 3/4ths of the way there.
You will love the faster processor, better ram and a much more user friendly OS, not to mention the speed and power........

Yes you are right Sniper, I've heard of alot of problems from people who upgrade to XP on an old 'puter, but no problems on factory loaded new computers! Time for a new one 1*!

Oneastrix, Linux handles digital cameras, and USB devices in general, perfectly well. SuSE Linux 8.1 also installs much faster than Winders, at least if you have a DVDROM.

My old Pentium 200 MMX Packard Bell runs 95 and is great with all internal programs except games. It's faster than my 500 Pentium III when I need it to actually do something useful. Perfect for word processing, image processing, and sound work. But it's NEVER been online. It cost a heck of a lot back in the 20th century.
