Slate, TEOTWAWKI Scenarios and How They Interlock

For the past week or so, Slate, an online magazine-cum-skribbleplanken of msn.com, has been having their readers vote on what scenarios they feel are most likely to lead to TEOTWAWKI. The results have been organized into a social-network format that shows how the various scenarios tie together - or don't, in a few instances.

Unfortunately, you can't get to the article that set up the voting any longer, which had brief descriptions of the scenarios. However, the social-network link is still up as of 8/16/2009. Take a look at it. It includes most of the possibilities we consider most likely/ You put your mouse on a scenario icon and it will tell you what scenarios connect to it. This is useful, because as we have discussed to some extent one thing can lead to others.

Here's the link. Pleasant dreams.

This link to FEMA's National Preparedness Guidelines discusses the National Threat Scenarios:

http://www.fema.gov/pdf/government/npg.pdf

The Guidelines define what it means for the nation to be prepared. There are four critical elements of the Guidelines:
  1. The National Preparedness Vision, which provides a concise statement of the core preparedness goal for the Nation.
  2. The National Planning Scenarios, which depict a diverse set of high-consequence threat scenarios of both potential terrorist attacks and natural disasters. Collectively, the 15 scenarios are designed to focus contingency planning for homeland security preparedness work at all levels of government and with the private sector. The scenarios form the basis for coordinated federal planning, training, exercises, and grant investments needed to prepare for emergencies of all types.
  3. The Universal Task List (UTL), which is a menu of some 1,600 unique tasks that can facilitate efforts to prevent, protect against, respond to, and recover from the major events that are represented by the National Planning Scenarios. It presents a common vocabulary and identifies key tasks that support development of essential capabilities among organizations at all levels. Of course, no entity will perform every task.
  4. The Target Capabilities List (TCL), which defines 37 specific capabilities that communities, the private sector, and all levels of government should collectively possess in order to respond effectively to disasters.

Red face

By the time the 'community' gets together, reads all that gobbledygook, understands it and is ready to DO something...... the emergency is over and done with. Dot.Gov spends entirely too much time crafting these nice presentations, and not enough time DOING something productive.
Too many upper level managers, not enough worker bees.
