Whereas the NH Squirrel season starts in a couple of weeks, I'm wondering if anyone else in Southeast NH has as noticed a rather unsettling lack of Gray Squirrels this summer.
As it is I have had families of squirrels living in my backyard and adjacent woods for as many years as I can remember (I've been living here on and off for nearly 55 years.) However, I have not seen one squirrel around my home since early spring - nests are abandoned and not one bushytail is bouncing through the many oaks around here. Moreover, I have seen nary a squirrel in my coming and goings around and about as I go to work or travel the local roads. In my walks in the woods in Derry, Sandown, Danville and Fremont (the places I typically hunt), I have seen or heard only enough Grays to count on one hand - and I am seeing very few, if any, road kills. So, what gives?! Be assured, I am a dedicated squirrel hunter, so I am seriously looking for the little buggers. But has anyone else noticed a lack of Gray squirrels as of late down around this part of the state? Or, and I hope this isn't the case, are my old baby blues just not up to the task of seeing the many (hopefully) squirrels that are staring me straight back in the face?
