Ballistics

I've read so many things about the .30 carbine. Most seem to be stories from WWII and later regarding FMJ military ammo. I ran across this and thought it was interesting and that I would share.

I took mine out today and fired my first rounds from a 30 round magazine. Had one failure to feed and found you could easily go broke shooting with those.
Here is the article.

Best Choices for Self Defense Ammo .30 carbine

From Doctor Roberts: "The best ammunition choices for the M1 Carbine are the Remington 110 gr JSP (R30CAR) and the Corbon 110 gr JHP DPX loading using the all copper Barnes X bullet. The Remington load has an average velocity of 1864 f/s, expands to around .54” to .58” and penetrates 13” to 16” whether in bare gelatin, through automobile windshields, or Level IIIa body armor. This is comparable intermediate barrier performance to many good .223 loads. Likewise, the Corbon DPX load penetrates 18.9" and expands to 0.56" in bare gelatin. The Winchester 110 gr JSP also works reasonably well, but has a bit smaller permanent wound channel compared to the Remington or Corbon DPX load. In addition, the new Speer 110 gr Gold Dot carbine load appears very promising based on the factory test data released at SHOT 2009"

New data shows that the 110gr Speer Gold Dot bonded soft point load is also a very effective performer. Penetration is in the 16-17" range through most of the FBI barrier test with near perfect expansion. Velocity at 10ft averages right at 2000fps.

Here also is a link to the entire article on personal defense ammo.

Thanks for the article.
I wouldn't pay much mind to it however since it appears the data was collected using ballistics gel at 10 feet. Velocity is of minor concern, enrgy at the target is what is more important, IMHO anyway.
The stories one hears the most is how inaffective the carbine is against enemy targets. These stories don't give specifics such as range, terrain, enemy clothing, and other things that usually affect that 110 gr pill.
It was indeed ineffective during the Korea War on Chinese troops who wore heavily padded quilted cold weather garments during winter campaigns at a range of slightly over 100 yards. This from a Marine who was at the Chosin.
FMJ doesn't expand well so the use of good soft points will provide you with better results.

Yea, I agree that shooting gelatin is not real world, but it does give a good comparison to the other ammo used in the test.

I have said it before and I'll say it again-use the Carbine like you would use a pistol. Just think of it as a 30 caliber Magnum:>) and the nice thing it gives you a 'pistol' with a 30 round magazine. I never had to shoot a 'Chink' in a heavy winter uniform but I put 'down' a good number of guys wearing black pajamas (Viet-Cong) so the M-2 Carbine worked well for me. For Urban situations I think the Cabine is fast to deploy, works good for my wife, etc.

New ammo such as the Corbon DPX considerably increase the lethality of this weapon............if you can afford it. I have two 15 round magazines with the new Corbon DPX and two 30 round magazines with Federal JSP. I'm very happy with the handling and shooting of the Carbine. I've shot more powerful, faster and newer weapons. I really like this as a defensive weapon.
If I could find another in the same condition for my wife, I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

This is from Handgunner Ballistics Website:

.357 110 gr. JHP
Velosity: 1295 muss.
1094 at 50 yards

Engery: 410 muss.
292 at 50 yards

.30 Cal. 110 Gr. Soft Point
Velosity: 1990 muss.
1567 at 100 yards.

Energy: 967 muss.
600 at 100 yards.

Corbon Info: ( from Corbon )

CORBON 30 CARB 100 GR. DPX HUNTER
2025 FPS/ 911 FTLBS

CORBON products have earned a distinctive reputation in the industry with our high energy JHP ammunition. Consistent with this standing new DPX line with its deeper penetration to makes it the optimum load for Law Enforcement, civillian use.

Barnes X Bullet retains 100% of its weight, even after shot through barriers such as clothing and steel. The permanent crush cavity is considerably larger than a typical JHP due to deeper penetration.
