The gun has been a phallic symbol for many years. Wonder who ratted them out? I'll bet it wasn't a gun owner.

Texas isn't currently an open carry state unless I missed something. What it really comes down to is the dumbasses shouldn't have been letting a civilian play with a police issue weapon and in public.

But does he deserve to get fired over it. A bit of an over-reaction to me. A severe counselling would have been more in order to my mind.

Actually it says Round Rock, Texas. I guess the article was written in Midland where the cops were from, but the events happened in Round Rock, where life shouldn't be too boring because it's so close to the capital of Texas weirdness - Austin.

Well we don't know know the track record for that particular deputy, who knows, this could just be one occurrence in a long list of bad decisions. If it was a first time f-up then I'd say give him the same treatment as the other deputies.

Talking

Something similar happened in Kansas City a few years ago. A firetruck and it's crew allowed a biniki clad woman post on top with the crew.

That photo hit the front page of the Kansas City Star...and caused a similar "stir." Heads rolled, hands slapped, but people never learn. It'll happen again, no doubt.

Scantily clad? She's got more covered than a Dallas Cowboy cheerleader does and I've never heard them referred to as "scantily clad". Think about this. An officer comes home and asks his teenage son to help him get his gear out of the car. The son is seen by a neighbor carrying the same type of weapon from the patrol car into the house and calls it in.
Does that officer deserve to be fired? It's an unauthorized person carrying a police-only issue weapon, after all.
How many of you have had an LEO friend let you hold, carry and perhaps even fire their issue weapons? Do they deserve to lose their job for that?

I'm betting that drinking on the job was what got them fired, but that wouldn't have made as good of a news story.

I'd say there's a large difference between a LEO having a son help him with his gear and a stranger who may have zero firearms knowledge or experience playing around with a rifle that was possibly condition one. I'm sure if someone called it in with his son helping him carry his gear in the department would think little of it once the story was known.

I wonder what happened to the bad boys club where the LEOs are supposed to be protected from all the stupid stuff they do by their "brothers" in LE.

Well, I'd call the Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders scantily clad....not that I'm complaining, mind you.

I don't think handing your rifle to a cocktail waitress outside a bar, and having her pose on your patrol car with it so you can take pictures, is particularly analogous to having your son help you carry your gear into the house.

That's like saying if someone who shoots an intruder breaking into his home isn't charged with a crime, they shouldn't charge the guy who shoots his neighbor during an argument.
