I have owned a Winchester model 120 since the mid 80's and love it. I recomend screw in chokes also, for versatility. Regretably I did not purchase the then available rifled slug barrel at the same time. I deer hunt with a Winchester model 1300 with slug barrel and those sweet Winchester rifle sights. Love it. Call me simple, but I love the Winchesters for the light wieght, high performance, and low price. For home defense, any intruder in my home is gonna face 5 rounds of 00 buck from that 120, then my back up.

Funny that, on a couple of competitions I've been involved in, most guys with DB's (ejectors) completed a 30 round course of fire faster than the pumps & autos??

It's a matter of how much training a person wants to do, the average "one box of shells to see if she works" gunowner couldn't. I can get a second shot at skeet with a H&R single shot...I hold a spare shell in my left hand, fire, "dump" it open with my right hand, load, and shut it while cocking it. But I've shot thousands of rounds through shotties. I would feel secure with any 12G myself...I just like pumps. I need to buy a double SxS though, just beacause.

Yup,
I've had an auto, got a pump , SxS and O/U (with 26 & 30" barrels) in 12 ga but I prefer the O/U, I could go all day long, bang-bang, dump, load, bang-bang.

Those O/U's and side by sides give you much quicker reloads. You don't have to flip the gun over and feed those shells in the tube mag.

My Mav 88 has been a good one. I've been thinking about putting a pistol grip on mine. Can you still aim it normally or will it pop you in the head?

In my opinion it should pop you in the head if you put a pistol grip on and no stock.But it probably won't.You just won't be able to hit what you want to much of the time.Those old timers were pretty smart years ago when they put a stock on handcannons to aid in aiming. ,,,sam.

^ I agree about the pistol grip. I have a 535 with a ATI six-position stock, I like the pistol grip WITH the stock, but shooting with just the pistol grip isn't very effective. The recoil aint bad, but accuracy is shite...it's amazing how bad you can miss something from the hip with a shotgun! LOL

That's what I thought. ATI has a fold over stock but it covers the Truglo sights and the safety. But I've heard side folders interfere too. Just trying to shorten it up and keep it accurate. I might go with a Knoxx stock then.

I have a remington 12GA that i plan to use for bird hunting. its an auto but from what your saying the pumps are better for birds. is that just your opinion or from expierence.

everything is opinion. the opinion may come from experience but it's still an opinion.. just my 2 cents. and as others have said, with practice any gun can be just as good as any other. get what feels good to you and is reliable from what others have experienced, then go from there. for the multi-purpose gun I would agree that pump is probably your best bet. another brand to add into the mix is benelli, they're a little pricier but I've heard nothing but good things.

Whoa! It's been a bit since I checked this post, but what a lot of information! Thanks to all. Okay, here's the update - there was a gunshow near my home town this past weekend. I went with the hopes of pricing some AR-15's and Sig P226's, and of walking out with a shotgun. Prices were a little unrealistic, even for used guns, so I left emptyhanded. Then my wife (yep, she VOLUNTEERED to go along, and had a good time!) suggested we go to the nearby Bass Pro Shop. Walked out with a Mossberg 535 vent-rib for less than $300. Can't wait to shoot it! I think I will add an M-4 buttstock and pistol grip (the pictures are cool, guys!), and maybe a second, shortened barrel for HD use. Red dot sight, too, but not right away. Having already made my purchase, Benelli is out for THIS round. I'm not sure I'm through buying shotguns, however, and I've heard nothing but good about Benelli, too. Maybe next time...
New question: I've shot shotguns before and am familiar with bead front sights and post front sights. My new gun has a bead at the end of the barrel, and a post about a foot and a half back. What is the sight picture in this arrangement, tip of the post in the middle of the bead, bead on top of the post, or what?
