What has happened is typical of the "Star knocked of it's perch" syndrone. Highly successulful athletes have had high public recognition and praise since they were little leaguers. At each level they continued to be the best...with even more praise. Eventually, as a pro, or at whatever level it occurs, something happens that causes them to no longer receive that high praise and recognition. They've never had to experience failure. They have no idea what other players went through while they got all the praise themselves.
So...then their mind starts working on them when they can't hear the "roar of the crowd" praising them anymore...and they become depressed. Could be caused by a physical accident, or anything else...but when this happens they become depressed...beginning to feel they're not loved, that there's no point in going on. They can't handle failure. They see no future.
I had a neighbor boy who committed suicide a few years back after his highly successful high school career as their #1 quarterback. Didn't get picked by a college...and suddenly felt he was worthless. This is very sad to see...but it's cureable...but they must seek professional counseling.
The professional counselors understand the human psyche...and can help rebuild it.
