I read last week on a Mil news website where the US Military/DOD had chosen to replace the Baretta92 9mm with a .45. The change will require 645,000 new mil service pistols to replace the std issue 9. They did note that some of the forces were still using .45's. They are in the process of determining what gun to go with now. It will not be the 1911. What to you think it will end up being??? From what I hear the troops are happy about it.
wasnt the HK USP one of the contenders when the 92 was selected? maybe a tweaked version to better suit the military in .45? also look at some of the polymer pistols. military likes saving weight so maybe a mil spec version of glock, XD or M&P with hi cap mags. might even see a new design come rolling out.

when they were picking the 9mm pistol i believe they got down to the Beretta 92 and the Sig 226 as the final two contenders, but i dont think either make a good high cap .45
i believe the special forces are using USP's, but that seems like a lot of pistol for general issue, both size and cost wise
I did find this though in a quick search, something called the joint combat pistol system JCP
99% chance it will be the FNP45. (if they choose a different caliper, they will choose another FN gun)
They will probably save a few hundred dollars per gun and probably at least some reliability issues. The Beretta is a fine weapon, but the newer polymer offerings seem to run like a top no matter what you do to them.
I think GLOCK in .45 would be a vast improvement over the current system...it wouldn't be a bad thing if they went back to the ol' 1911/.45 platform IMO.

one would think the US govt would look to US gun makers to stimulate the US economy but i wouldnt be surprised if they went overseas and bought glock, hk or fn. global economy at work i suppose

If the Kimber "SIS" series works for L.A's SWAT.... I like the look of the 1911 over most of the rest, the only drawback I can see would be single stack vs. Hi-Cap, Then again maybe the Taurus 24/7 series........ I think Im glad I aint the one that has to narrow the field

As much as I love the 1911. It would make sense to pick something that is high-cap. The biggest drawbacks on the 1911 are the single action and capacity.
Hi-Cap would certainly make more sense, just sayin that given the number of options in .45 these days I'm glad I dont have to make that decision. As a former infantry Marine I would want to have the same number of rounds in .45 as I did in 9mm. As for SA vs DA I dont think it matters too much, I prefer the lighter trigger pull of carrying "cocked & locked". But then the powers that be in todays Military will probably go with DA so as to reduce the chance of someone inadvertantly shooting themself in the process of deploying their weapon.
