Well, this is the new computer system I'm considering building:
AMD DC7850 black box 2.8 X 2 82.00
PC-800 2 gig memory 36.00
MSI KA 780 AM2 G/H/D/V/R/A 71.00
Total. 204.59 after tax.
Software : Ubuntu 8:10 Media center for music creation.
or BSD, very stable.
It will all l fit in my existing mid tower, Maybe a quieter power supply @ 400 watts.
What do you think all you computer people? Chris, any input, you are the pro. I only get two IDE sockets, but I'll just go for a 250 MB hard drive.
Looks good for a basic computer. I've been building computers for about 10 years, and it is definitely a good way to save money and get exactly what you want.
It looks like you could isolate a few upgrades for a little bit. They are selling OCZ Dual Channel 2x2GB DDR2 800 RAM for like $50. That might be a better option than just 2GB, but it's up to you.
Just a couple options for ya. I didn't check into the others.
Also, go to google and type in AMD Quad Coupon Codes. You can find a lot of coupons for processors...also check for the other hardware. There are a lot of deals out there. Most of the coupon codes are applied at the shopping cart, you input the code and select: Apply Coupon or something similar. A lot of the codes you find are expired or don't work, but keep looking and you'll usually find a $10-$30 off or 10-40% off coupon codes.
Deersniper - I kinda agree with CrazyIvan here. I would kick the ram up to at least 3, probably 4 gig, as it it quite cheap and will give you a more responsive system. I personally think that rather than looking at a higher end processor, you might put that money toward a second 250 gig hd. They are also pretty inexpensive now, and you have a disc for backup as well as storage of photo's and other large files, which will keep your main "C" drive leaner and quicker. The processor you chose should be plenty.
I just built a new rig myself (had a lightning strike) and am a photographer. Sounds like you will have a nice rig. Don't forget the malwarek/spyware protection. It can be had for free and works well.
If you give me a price, budget, and goal of what you are trying to do...I can help you plan it out. Feel free to PM as well.
Careful planning, and price searching can yield great results. Over about 2-3 months, I build a Quad core media PC with 8 gigs of ram, 8TB of space for less than 700 bucks.

Where'd you get storage that cheap?
I'm running 64-bit Vista on a Intel Quad Core, 12 GB RAM and 4 TB storage. Love the machine, but it was a heck of a lot more than 700 bones.

Sheesh computer parts have changed since I stopped building computers but I used to build for overclocking and stuff like that but then it got too expensive
Everybody here is right. You need to put some serious RAM in the system, and 2 GIG is not enough. Also you need a much larger hard drive if you are dealing with music creation and storage. I'd take up Chris on his offer to lay out a plan for you. My 2 cents.

Yes Moose I meant Gig. thanks for the input people. Just did some reviews and they turned out good for these components. Gamehunter the chips are hard to over clock. Don't know what that means. CI I'll check into those coupons. I did go with what I originally stated, went shopping and they kicked everybody out of the water. He installed the chip, fan and ram for me, so I'll just replace the MB and see if the existing power supply will adapt to the new chip and hard drives. If not, it is another 40.00. I might want to do that anyway.
AMD is right here in my city, so was the computer guy, so I contributed to the local economy. We need that right now. Thanks for all your input, what a family! WoHoo. Gotta go and ground myself.
I was running 128 of ram before, so this will be an improvement.

I just got a 1TB 7200 Western Digital HDD from Best Buy for $112. They have some good deals with those coupon codes online to get a 1TB for $80 or 2TB for around $130 though.
Here is a 1TB Western Digital from Dell for $92. But, with the coupon code: 7LXC0FZZR54P3X applied at the checkout, you get free 2nd day shipping and the Hard Drive for just under $83. This coupon ends 08/31 by the way...
1TB of space will hold about 250,000 songs. Of course, you'll lose about 20GB for programs & crap, which won't lower your song count by much...and if you have 250,000 songs...SHEESH! lol

I wasn't sure if you were putting this together yourself, or what. It really isn't that hard. But, if you are, I would recommend when you set up your system, that you partition your hard drive into multiples. My 1TB HDD, I partitioned 450GB to the System Drive, which is the operating system, and any programs I install. I am doing some heavy video editing, and I do a lot of gaming, so it can rack up the space. The other 550GB is on a drive where I keep all my user files, such as the videos I create, a backup of my windows folder (to be sure I get all my game saves) and anything else I do, such as invoices, download executable programs, such as game installs, as well as word documents, etc... That way, if the System drive junks out for some registry or operating system reason, then I don't lose all the user files.
This may seem like common sense, but a lot of people totally overlook doing this, and come to me wanting me to recover their files. It isn't hard if you have another computer to hook your hard drive to, but if you only have one computer, you are stuck with paying someone else to do it for you. Where, if you have your personal files separated, and need to reinstall your operating system, you can just reinstall it without worrying about losing your personal files.

Just remember that after around 3 GB memory, you aren't adding anything unless you are running a 64-bit operating system.
Kinda true, but it goes a step further. The 32-bit systems will only recognize a total of 2GB system memory. This includes video RAM and your physical RAM. So, if you have 2GB of physical RAM and a 512mb Video card...your 32-bit system will only recognize 1.5GB of physical RAM and the 512MB video, making it a total of 2GB. Or, if you have a 256MB Video Card and 2GB of physical RAM, it will only recognize 1.75GB of the physical RAM.
Some motherboards won't even do this though. If you have 2x1GB sticks of RAM equalling 2GB, then install a 512mb Video Card, your motherboard may only recognize 1 of those 1GB sticks with a 32-bit system. This is where cost and value come in when it comes to motherboards, how they are built and their BIOS.
I'd say just go with a 64-bit system and forget about it.

Yeah, I'm putting it together myself. Just some 1/4" nut driver screws. It is 64 bit compatible. It has two slots for memory sticks, 2 gig should do for now. I'm going to go into the secret laboratory for a while now. See you soon.

This is why I went 64 bit. I love my 12 GB of RAM. And additional GB of video card.
Game, music, web surfin, photo editing and much more all at the same time. Not a single hiccup. EVER.
People tell me they've had problems with Vista, but I haven't. It's been flawless.
LOVE IT!
As for the storage space, I shoot a lot of sports photography. Those terabytes actually fill up pretty quick when shooting a thousand pics a game of JPG and RAW. I came back from an event a couple weeks ago and had four 8 GB CF cards full. I couldn't even guess how many digital pics I have on my system. They're organized, but not counted.

Well, the power supply wasn't compatible with the new board, so I''l change that out too. The other one was way noisy. I'll be running Ubuntu 8.10, A sound Blaster live drive, a CD burner so I can record bass lines and let my bandmates practice it in between sessions. WOHOO! Trying to find a digital camera that is Linux compatible today.
I'm baaack! Everything went well. I love this new box. Now to sort out my program, it is all new.
I would like to thank all you fine members for your advise and thanks to Chris for suggesting Ubuntu. Fire Fox rocks! Total cost $ 208.75
