I like my Rossi 92 in 45Colt. It is fast handling, accurate, and handy in the woods or tight confines of a home. That 45 has been killing bad guys for over 125 years and I see no reason it wouldn't work today. Load it with full power loads, and it will kill any deer or Black Bear within 100 yds.

I have to go with the Rossi in 44 mag! out to 150 yards the deer need to be afraid....

I love my .44Mag carbine...but, .44Mag revolvers do take a bit of getting used to.
I think my next carbine will be a Winchester or Marlin model 1894 in .357Mag to go along with my Ruger SP101.
But I have also thought about doing the Mech-Tech carbine conversion to a Glock 21 (.45ACP).

Metronome, YOU hit it on the head! That is such an under rated round. A 16" carbine with that round and a high cap mag would be great. High velocity, low recoil and cheap ammo. Put some hollow points on that and you are good to go.

Rossi makes some nice leveraction carbines in pistol calibers they are expensive though the last one was a 454casull stainless steel & ported with fire sights and laminated stock for over $700 landed in Nothwest Alaska.
I used to have a rossi Puma (92) in 38/357 that I parted with out of boredom/stupidity same went for the Ruger .44mag carbine I had too it was very accurate and shot very nice (no nasty recoil & noise) I think they make these guns in 460Ruger and 500S&W so they can be as bad azz as you want or meek.
As I remember with the Puma it wouldent cycle .38 wadcutters and once loaded and you started fireing rounds the ones were behind the loading gate blocked it so you couldent top off the mag after fireing a couple rounds you had to live with it till it ran out.

44-40 in a Rossi 92. It's fun to shoot especially with black powder. It cleans easier than a 45 Colt with bp because the bottleneck case keeps fouling from entering the action. It'll take a deer down at 100 yds. and it's historically accurate for a lever action unlike the .45 Colt.

I suppose the "right" answer for you would depend on what you want it for. Plinking? Hunting? Defense? Lever action or autoloader? I have 9mm and .40 High Point carbines, and those are GREAT plinkers! Outstanding fun! Also have a Winchester Trapper lever carbine in .44 mag., very accurate and also great fun, but a little more bodacious to shoot. Recently bought an M1 Carbine from a member here, and it's also a hoot, but I suppose that's not really a "pistol caliber".

Its actually a pretty potent little round. The military trusted it for defense use. And I wouldn't hesitate to deer hunt with it. Obviously you would want to use appropriate bullets and keep your distance as short as possible but for SHTF scenarios, I think it would be a good choice.
I have a Puma Model 92 in .45 Colt that I love. Its super fun to shoot and super light recoil with "cowboy" loads. There are some "HOT" commercial loads out there that are safe to use in the Model 92 if you choose to hunt with it. There are also a variety of revolvers chambered in .45 Colt. Most are single action---in fact the only Double Actions I can think of are the Taurus Judge and the Ruger Redhawk.
.45 Colt ammo is a bit on the pricey side, but can be reloaded very cheap.

| My M1 carbine has a 15 round mag in it, has a pouch on the buttstock with two more 15-rounders, and another pouch on the sling with two more 15-rounders. I can snatch that puppy up and head out the door with 75 rounds in one hand, ready to dance!

I have 3 Handi Rifles, one each in .357 Maximum, 357 Magnum and .445 Super Magnum. The .357 Max shoots .38s, (several types) 360 DW, .357 Mag and .357 Max. The .445 shoots .44 Special, .44 Russian, .44 Mag and .445 SM. Lots of versatility there. The .357 Magnum is getting cut to 16.5 inches, reamed to Maximum and fitted with a youth stock and a red dot scope for a truck gun. The .357 Max is both a 200 yard deer rifle and bunny gun. It's a very accurate rifle, and the .38's jump to the rifling doesn't hurt it a bit.

Had some in different calibers and platforms
Rossi Puma in .38/357
Ruger .44carbine in .44mag
Hi-Point 995 in 9mm
EMF 92 in .45colt
Liked the .44mag its performance was good, the platform wasent that good.
I like the reliability of the Hi-point 995 just wished it lobbed bigger lead (.45acp)
Lever guns are nice if they have a loading gate its nice to top the mag with rounds in the mag (not possible with the 92 clones I had)
