You can get a pistol chamdered to a 450 marlin. And a 45/70 for that matter.

Beretta carbine

I have a Beretta CX4 9mm STORM carbine which is all one could ask for.

It uses pistol mags ( 92 ) and will hold 20 rounds per mag.

Loaded with the right 9mm stuff it will handle most anythying.

I still love the Ruger Deerstalker - 44 mag Carbine.

It's a nice light rifle, the 44 mag cartridge is big enough to take most medium game short range. And it balances perfectly for me.

I haven't fired any others, so I can't really compare.

I'd like the 7.62 x 25 also, cheap shooting, OK for small game, can take a deer out to about 150 yd. if you really need to. Small as a 22lr and more useful as a tool for woods survival in the instance of inoperative car or airplane.

What do people think of those little one-shot break-open carbines that are chambered for .410 shotgun/.45LC? It sounds like a lightweight fun way to dispose of bunnies with the shotgun and have the .45 on hand for bigger prey like foxes up close.

Since the barrel is rifled, I can't imagine that you could kill a rabbit past 10 yards max. Better off to get a .22 magnum or .223 /20 or 12 ga Over/Under if you want that kind of versatility.

1927A1 Thompson by Auto Ordinance. 30 rounds of .45ACP is formidable. At the range, it's accurate and fun. For home defense, it's manuverable and with 5 30 round mags, I have 150 rounds of incredible stopping power!

Yea, it is heavy. what I really like is the really low recoil. Easy to stay on target.

I have owned both an H&K model 94 and an MP5-SD - great plinkers, inexpensive shooting 9mm. Have owned a Marlin 1894 in 357 - shooting light-loaded 38 Specials, I could shoot it all day, and even used it to teach some gun-shy gorls to shoot. I currently have a Marlin 1894 Cowboy in 45 Colt, a Uberti Henry in 45LC (okay, not really a carbine per se, but fun to shoot), a Beretta CX4 in 9mm, and a rifle of my own making, a small-ring Mauser chambered in 45 Winchester Magnum (FrankenCarbine).

Marlin, 1894, 44Magnum. I reload 44 Special "down" for practice, plinking & general "fun shooting" (at the local range) For serious shooting, I load the 44 Magnum "up" for much more serious speed and power (and "Kick") Anything you buy at a store is loaded for handgun. For the rifle, you can safely load for more "power" but your shoulder may suffer! Definitely a favorite rifle!

Favorite Carbine Cartridge

I have an FN PS90 and my wife has the FN 57. 20 rounds in a pistol with virtually no kick.

You have likely made your choice by now but here is my opinion.
For target practice, squirrel hunting, and economy you can't beat a 22. It is the best cal to learn to hunt with since you learn accuracy and safety. In the right hands it can be a good self defense round. I killed a deer once when I was about 13 with a .22 short. It went between the ribs on one side and ricocheted around the rib cage destroying the heart and lungs. Would I do it again, no. This is just to make a point, don't overlook the .22.
I have several lever guns, bolt actions, pistols, shotguns, etc. As mentioned several times the .357 mag, .44 mag, and .45 Colt can be had for rifle and pistol. You can load down for the pistol or rifle to save money or load up for defense or game. My recent interest is a .45 Colt Marlin that I have that I'm going to use with Hornady's leverevolution ammo. Couple that with a Ruger Single Action handgun or two and you have a potent combination. So if you are going to handload any combination of the above will work fine. The .357 route would allow you to carry a smaller handgun in .357 that would shoot .38 specials, if size of handgun is an issue. For that matter the .44 Mag would work the same way with a small .44 special pistol. Not so much with the .45's the only small one that I have seen is the Bond derringer which would be a handful.
Heck, do like me and just try to get all of them over a period of time. You just never know when they are going to try to restrict us from being free Americans.
