LOL Don't suppose it has anything to do with all the hot air generated in Springfield do you? Couldn't help myself.

Maybe an administration change will bring less severe weather! Seriously though when ever I drive down 72 in late spring or early summer it seems like half the signs are folded over from high winds.

Your sure right about that, seems the winds follow 72.Worked a lot in the Champaign area and got drownd out and blowed away more than once.Got caught in a tornado once on a big dirt and pipe job and ended up going down the manholes for cover.Worst one I saw was at Savoy when it blew loaded boxcars off the tracks.

The Lefthanders Gun Club range at Loami, SW of Springfield, had lots of damage. So did the town of Loami. I've seen pictures of the gun club and it isn't pretty. Here's a link to their website that has a few pictures. I've seen more pictures of the range and it only gets worse.

Yep, a real mess. I was going to ride up there tomorrow to watch the three gun match since I have no idea how that goes but, I think I'll just stay home instead. Maybe, next month.

That area is a tornado alley. Seems to hit there and cruise on into the South West end of Springfield year after year. Thats why I live 20 minutes north east of there!

We lived in Auburn from 1974 to 1980 and remember the weather. Had the worst ice storm I've ever been through while we were there so it isn't just tornados.

Hey, Crosshair, do you figure that Springfield takes the hit and gives you guys a bye? We live about 30 miles East of St. Louis now and it helps us a lot with bad weather. It hits STL, splits, and the worst of it goes North and South of us. Suits me just fine.

Oh yeah tigercat, I live outside of Illiopolis and it is at the top of the "sangamon valley" on the east side of springfield, seems like the bad storms go through the west side and kind of dissipate or move north of us following the ridge line of the sangamon valley, its not clear from the ground Illinois seems flat, but from above you can tell the drop in elevation and see the depression of the valley.

Auburn seems to get some crummy weather too, I have some friends there that always get hit with crappy weather.

Not that the weather can be ideal in Illiopolis! LOL quite the contrare, but as far as the tornadoes and severe T'storms they seem to move around us... fingers crossed!

In the past couple years we have had 3 tornados follow the same path, with in a few miles. A builder I work for just built his house just north of Chatham and his neighbor,
300 yards away, got his detached garage destroyed.Across the street were 4 trashed corn trailers. His horse trailer got moved about 75 feet, but no damage. Clean living,I guess.

I was coming back from a horse show at the state fairgounds last year and had a storm pick my Equinox up off the road briefly. I would not have believed it if my buddy was not there to witness the same thing.

You all can have Springpatch storms for sure.

Didn't Illiopolis get torn up really bad back in the late 70's or so? I was on the Auburn Emergency Squad at the time and we were wondering about the stuff at Bordens that blows up if it gets over 80 degrees or some such thing. I'm sure they had a generator to keep it cool until CIPS got things going again since we never heard the boom.

Everything that could go boom already did about 6 years ago! Whole area can get some really bad weather, just seems to be concentrated worse on the SE side of springfield! It can stay there if its up to me! I got some concrete remnants of the war factory left on my property... havent had to go hunker down out there yet, but have had a few times where air pressure drops and weather channel says to take cover where we ALMOST did. Cant hear any sirens out here so gotta keep a good eye and a battery powered storm radio on the ready.

We moved to Illiopolis area 5 years ago so not sure about the 70's! I grew up around Blue Mound area not too far away.
