That is pretty ridiculous. Instead of trying to teach wasteful people to be more responsible, they're trying to protect the people from their own wastefulness. Smart...how do the British members feel about this?
Born in california, raised in Devon (from 10 years old, back in ca from 28 YO).
from reading the article it seems ok. they want stores to run a different kind of discount (half price or other). on the other hand can you really legislate responsibility? I'm all for less packaging and better labeling, and really, i'd prefer to pay less for one item than take 2, one of which I may not eat.
There are a few of things I miss about England, and plenty of reasons I don't want to live there any more, but this wouldn't be one of them.
Thrillbilly, thank you, but us Island monkeys have pretty thick skins (and skulls). I think we lost our sensitive side when we decided to colonize the entire known world.
Well what can I say that stormy Petrol above hasn't said.
Not enough to make me move to the States yet. (mind you, they probably wouldn't have me anyway, I'm working class, white, middle aged, emotionally stable, hetrosexual)

Just a tad insensitive SB...considering we have members from the U.K. here on G&G.
i dont think im being insensitive, i can have an opinion about this and how much crap i think it is for the government of any kind to tell private business's how they should run their stores
im not saying the UK is a crap hole, im saying that this is retarded (and mind you there are retards everywhere in power, not just the UK......)

you can say England's a crap hole. it shouldn't be, but in my opinion it's headed that way. some of the most beautiful scenery in the world, a very temparate climate, not too hot, not too cold. AND a government that doesn't feel like it needs to listen to it's citizens.
i would totally recommend a trip there if you get a chance.

id totally love to go to be honest, most british folks (with the exception of one) were really cool, and pretty well educated and liked to talk about good things
i think id enjoy it there very much for a while (although i hear its expensive for us poor georgia boys)
Obviously, I'm not wild about interference between customers and retailers. On the other hand, I was also surprised to read the claims that a third of the food bought there is wasted. That's pretty shocking, if true. I can see the benefits of replacing "buy one get one free" deals with half-price deals.....
At the stores I'm used to shopping in, it's common to see signs like, "special: 10 for $10.00," or whatever. But you don't have to buy ten; if you only take one or two up to the front, you get them for a buck apiece anyway. Same thing with "two for the price of one" deals; you can usually buy just one, for half price.
Petrol - This thread explains your handle. Didn't know you were a "Devonshire". How did you come to live there? Like to hear of some experiences you had living in England.

again id like to see how much waste america has by contrast
what sounds like a lot might just be a standard for having such a wide availability of food
by forcibly driving up the price of food essentially, you force people to conserve more than they need to, further the article did not specify in what way the food was spoiled or wasted
maybe because people buy more than they consume, perhaps alot of the food gets damaged, er whatever
theres a reason behind all this, i just count my lucky stars i would live in such a place that has so much food

I don't think wasting a third of the food sold in a country is, or should be, a standard just because it's readily available.
I don't see how having the stores put each package on sale individually, instead of requiring that people buy two to get the sale price, would drive up the cost of food at all. I don't think they should pass a law, but it's a good idea to do it that way.
And yes, the article did specify: it said much of the food is thrown out because people buy more than they need, or can use before it goes bad.
How many times have you went to the grocery store and purchased something that looked good, only to find out it taste like chit and wasn't fit to eat. Considering you couldn't give it away, even to a third world country without causing an international incident, you toss it.

Yea, this is a place for the goverment to get involved. In any country. I've got an 11 yr old , like a pitbull puppie head down an growling when eating, not to much food wasted here.still a big food bill anyhow.
