I was wondering what ammo I should get for my mini 14(581) thats good but also not too expensive, you know not competition grade, but non jamming squirrel to boar hunting ammo.
What choices do you have available where you are? Ammo is kind of hard to come by in some areas.
well Ii prefer to order online, cabela's mainly but I will order from any website that ships to california. other then that i only pick up shotgun ammo in stores.
For general shooting, I'd go 55gr FMJ, head shots on hogs, at least 62gr. Georgia Arms sells good stuff, They're the only people I buy .223 and 10mm ammo from. I hand load .223 and 10mm.

that looks like a great price from Georgia arms how does it shoot and is it brass or steel casings.
My son is being issued a Mini-14 tactical model by our state soon. He does'nt seem to be to happy about it when our State Troopers have AR-15. M-4's. As well has our other branches of law enforcement.
I'm just wondering if the Mini-14 is probmatic and if it's acurate. I seriously dought though the rifles will see any use due to being issued to certain Park Ranger's.
both of mine are 100% reliable and accurate enough for hunting 2 or 4 legged animals. I like the feel of the Mini 14 better than the AR but that is my preference

one note on the mini 14. check your owners manual. most mini's will shoot 5.56 or 223 ammo. they do or did make a target model that is 223 only due to it's short throat.
I sold my mini for an AR. the mini's accuracy was aceptable, but not excellent. the only problem I had with the mini was the way the mag and rear latch are designed allows the back of the mag to move upward slightly under recoil (I have a brand new one on the shelf that shows this movement also) over time this causes the front edge of the mag to roll inward to the point it would start causing failure to feed problems. a few seconds with a pair of pliers would fix the issue for another 500 to 700 rounds. the AR type rifles do not have such a problem because the mag well is much deeper limiting the mags movement.
My Mini 14 is a '90, never modified and was much more reliable than a buddy's WASR AK; watched him shoot only about 60-80 rounds at a slow rate. The "AK" had a mis-eject or misfeed.
My Mini was perfect with over 1,200 rounds: only used Wolf/S. Bear. Why was it sold?
Having both a Mini 14 and 30, and sharing a very large heap of ammo with the SKS (then only 4,000 rds.), only sold the 14 to 'justify' buying my first Lee-Enfield #5 "JC" : favorite gun.
That old Mini 14 is much more rugged/dependable than my former "AO" brand-new imitation M-1 Carbine, which was returned for a major (jammed bolt) malfunction/free repair.
