There is a general debate that if gun cabinets are necessary at all. My personal feeling is that, these cabinets are beautiful piece of artwork that keeps our guns safe from multiple threats. Do you agree?
I used to use a gun cabinet for display. That was when I never locked my home. Now. The doors are locked, the alarm is armed and the gun safe is closed and locked when I'm not there.
I have a 10 gun cabinet with glass doors. I like my gun case because I can see my guns. My wife gave me the cabinet for Christmas 32 years ago.
If someone were to break in and steal them most could be replaced though I hope that never happens. And the sentimentel value could never be replaced.
I need another one or a much bigger one. I have guns scattered around the house in closets and I don't like not being able to see them
^+1 for being able to enjoy looking at them. Folks around here know I've got a fairly good collection now and security became a necessity. The plus side is I sometimes get phone calls from folks handling estates and so on that result in some good opportunity to pick up additions to the collection.
That is a really nice gun cabinet Ox. I would love to display my guns, but like CW, I have them secured in a vault and the house set up with an automatic alarm with police notification. Most of what I have was carefully accumulated over many years and I wouldn't have the time, will, or finances to replace them now. We live in a rather safe community of active duty military and retirees on a large residential island with one main road leading on and off, but the rare burglary still happens. My brother-in-law, who is an attorney in North Carolina and who makes much more money than I do suffered the loss of his prized collection of 19th century British small arms and fine double barreled shotguns that he spent half a lifetime accumulating. He "could" replace them, but to this day he is too heartsick to even get involved in becoming a collector again. Every evening, I’ll bring one or two rifles out to look at. Lately, I haven’t even been shooting any of them because of ammo scarcity and cost, though that problem seems to be subsiding.

If you get more than a half dozen rifles, then it might not hurt to at least look around for a vault. My wife got one for me that is "rated" at 24 rifles and/or shotguns. Actually, that many might be a little tight, but I guess they'll all fit if I get many more. I have well over a dozen now and the vault sure gives me piece of mind when we're out of town. Don't pay full price if you decide to get one. There are sure to be plenty of used vaults on the market. Even new ones are marked down due to the recession. As far as gun cabinets go, they are attractive. I may get one to put a couple of long arms in so there won't be any knocking around inside the vault on those early mornings when it's time for a hunt.

Getting ready to convert a closet.
Extra 5/8" dry wall with 18ga sheet metal on walls. (for security and fire protection)
Steel door and jamb with dead bolt.
Eye secured to floor with cable through trigger guards
Golden rod for humidity control
Shelves for pistols and stuff.
[QUOTE=Windwalker;982211]Gun cabinets are beautiful and a great way to display your guns. It's just that they don't offer much in the way of security.[/QUOTE
What he said, plus the fire protection is nil. That said, I'm going to build one when I get the time and money that, I hope, will accomplish all of the requirements that I want, ie: beauty, visibility of guns, safety, fireproof (somewhat).
In the past I used a Wooden Gun Cabinet and drilled a hole in each side so I could run a cable thru the trigger guards. After my collection got some size, I just put the Cowboy Action & Blackpowder stuff in there, the rest went in the Big New Safe...then it became the TWO Big Safes...LOL
Dang Marlins keep multiplying like Rabbits..LOL

Though I have and do keep some of my guns in a gun cabinet, I'm in full agreement with you who know the risk that's being taken because of the ease for a perp to break into it. One of my goals this year is to buy a gun safe and start moving my guns into it.
Jerry...I like the sounds of your gun closet design. Sound like you covered all bases. Fire...humidity...break-in. What type of lock system will be used on it's door? Padlock? Dead Bolt? Combination Lock? Other???
So, to make up for the lack of manners so far, Welcome to the site, Guncabinet! I'm sure these guys were just so taken with the conversation that they didn't notice your post count was only 1.

A gun cabinet is just that, a cabinet. Meant to dispay your firearms. It will keep, if it has a lock, children and others out of it that merely want to look. But they usually have glass so they can be displayed. That class can easily be broken. Some have a cable locking system. Well, a pair of bolt cutters can take care of that.
So my opinion is this. A gun cabinet is for displaying guns, and it will do just that, display your guns. While a gun safe is to keep your guns safe and it will do just that, keep your guns safe.
