Didn't have my fishing buddy with me today so I took these pictures the best I could. It was a good day at Smithville Lake, NW of Kansas City...cloudy, air temp around 74, water temperature 76 deg. and I fished at around 27 ft deep, slightly above the lake bottom under a bridge up close to a concrete pier.
This 26 inch, 7 lb, 7 oz, channel catfish fought for close to fifteen minutes before it surfaced enough to grab it with a net. My 6 lb. test line was put to a real test...but it held. Afterwards, because the line had stretched to much it would not wind up properly on my reel...it kept spiriling in all directions...no doubt it was almost pulled in two.
Normally, I release catfish because I'm really fishing for crappie. But...this catfish looked really healthy, and it's fillets were huge.
BTW, I also caught three crappie's over 9"...one being 10". All are in my fridge now...so there's gonna be a big fish fry one of these days.
Thats a WHOMPER! Way to go Oxford! Did ya' catch him doing your tie to the pier technique? I take it you caught him in the day... I as many other true fisherman gotta know...??????
whadd'ya use fer bait????
.......And just where's this fishin' hole at on a map??? LOL
J/K congrats on the big whiskers buddy!

Crappie is wonderful and I bet the cat was fun and your line didn't break, (they like to roll). Do you ever watch PBS? There's a guy that does a BBQ show (northern style) some cool tips and once he had a beer batter reciepe that something I want to try---looked like it might be like those fancy eating places use. Battered fish, yum yum.... channel 6 out of Warrensburg, not sure if Ch 41 does or not, been a long time that I live in the KC area (Shawnee/Overland Park/Merriam)
That is one pretty cat Ox! Looks like a good day of fishing. Now you are making me think about taking a night fishing trip over the weekend sometime. Good one boss!

CrossHair...that cat was purring inside my boat at about 1:30 p.m. Unlike some fishermen, I'm in the lake by 10 A.m....and usually leave around 3 p.m.
LakerDad...The cat definitely rolled, and rolled, and rolled and fought for it's life...all to no avail. Didja see the my bloody knife laying there just waiting to execute the poor thing.(ha) Had to cut off quite a bit of line afterwards because it was stretched so much it wouldn't dangle right...kept twisting up on my rod and wouldn't go on the reel properly. Didn't mind doing that for sure. I'd be happy to cut away more line if/when I catch another lunker.
A.A...now I know there's a lot of good fishing holes in Arkansas...because my wife's from Fort Smith...and I heard plenty of fishing stories from her dad.
White Rock...Actually I was fishing for crappie...but at the same spot alongside the concrete bridge pier I've caught not only crappie, but drum, perch, blue catfish, channel catfish, walleye pike and sun perch. The moss alongside the submerged concrete pier is an attraction because it offers a degree of protection, and bigger fish might go there to eat smaller fish(ha).
Papa G...I give a lot of my fish away...mostly to my son in law who really enjoys it. Occasionally my wife fries us a batch...and I like to sprinkle it with tarter sauce. And slaw as a side goes well with it.
musicmaniac...I haven't fished at night for a long time. But...years ago I was with a guy and we had a fun time running trot lines at night. During that same trip we also grabbed bull frogs by their back after they were blinded. They made good eating, too.
OX, nice mess of fish! Makes me wish I was back in south Texas trot lining for cats or sitting on the bank of the river with a set of jug lines out. Good times!

awesome cat, i cant wait to get back out and go fishing its been a long time since i sold my 2man boat. i know what ya mean about stretchin some line on those cats, i fished all night once at a pond 9pm till around 9am. and didnt catch anything but baby cats all night smaller than my hand using chicken livers for bait. come day light i throw on a zoom trick worm for some bass fishing and what ya know. i got a huge cat on the line. only having 6lb test at the time i was stressing on that old rod. cat came out to 9lb 11oz. as soon as i got it to the bank and on land the line literally Fell off the hook leaving the hook in its mouth haha. idk how i landed it. the ponds rules were stupid tho anything over 6lb had to be put back.. doesnt make sense. should be the opposite
