With the AR-15, you get just the opposite of all of these.
The big reason SWAT teams and police units are using ARs and M-16s is they're getting them for free from DHS. See the AR-15 section.

BTW, I'm getting 1.5 MOA out of my Mini and it's an older version. MOA accuracy out of a comparable AR? Give me a break! More like 2-3 MOA.

Stocks with the modularity to slap tacticool crap on it are available for the Mini. And with few exceptions, you can't have a folding stock on an AR, unlike the Mini.

Between ProMag and Ruger, there are plenty of options for quality magazines.

Billy, you've got old information. Try out one of the newer Minis and THEN tell us what you think.

Are you using a Hotmail or Gmail account? They seem to have problems with them.

jrswanson1:
As for the Mini 14, you guys may all know this (and much more), but Ruger first began selling factory 20-rd. mags to civilians only After the November election. They have never built any high-cap mags for the Mini 30, or at least few, and absolutely none for civilians.
Let's keep '30-rd.' (Mini 14) mag issues separate from the actual Mini 30 and vice versa. Vague language makes reading "Perfectunion" confusing. Sellers for aftermarket (mostly junk) Mini 30 mags state "factory mags" or such.

Somebody mentioned SWAT teams. Just trivia, but a Deputy stood next to me in a gun shop last week, and I told him that a guy came in the Memphis show in late Sept, trying to sell his (Swiss) Sig .223/5.56.

This officer told me that a Memphis area dept. was giving up its Sigs because some firing pins were coming loose. Pardon the digression from Minis.

I think I got it. I recently put a different scope on my Mini-30, here is the target, again not the best accuracy but the best I have ever gotten from my Mini-30. You can see how long it took to actually get the rifle "zeroed", but to be fair I was shooting bulk ammo I got on sale at a gun show, instead of high quality factory ammo. The scope I was using is also an inexpensive Bushnell scope instead of a high dollar scope. But I am finnaly happy with the way it shoots.

I picked up a mini-14 because I wanted to have fun with it. It's going to be the 50yd pop can - iron site kinda gun. I would have picked up an AR15 but the mini was cheaper and I like the action on it.

I spent years playing with the m16 and can pick it apart blindfolded. I wanted something new. Someday I will go back to the AR style but not until I have loads of fun with the mini. I'd love to have an M1 but that is not in my price range right now.

I disagree.

I'm on my third mini-14 and I can knock down beer cans at 100 yards with them all day. I am ex-Army or you can call me a vet, and my Mini-14 shoots as good as any M-16 I shot while in the US Army, we are talking iron sights right?

I had a mini 14, 580 series. I had some trouble with the mags (both 5 and 20 round) even though they were Ruger mags. The gun was really fun to shoot when it wasn't misfeeding/jamming. I come to find out I was supposedly running it too dry, maybe. I didn't keep it long enough to figure out why it was malfunctioning. Fortunately I was able to return it to the store with a 30 day return policy. As far as accuracy, not too bad really, but it doesn't compare to the 30 dollars cheaper DPMS Sportical I bought, which BTW has not misfed in the 500 + rounds I've fed it. I know the DPMS is no precision instrument either, but I'm shooting at paper targets and bean cans. Both did well at the range, but the AR definitely has been more reliable and more accurate. Just my 2 cents.

Never had a feed problem with any of the three mini-14's I've had. Am I just lucky or is the mini-14 not as bad as some of you make it out to be?

I think the mini 14 is a good gun. My problem was very likely operator error. I'm a rookie.
