mossberg maverick 88 rifled barrel vs smoothe bore
ok so i have a 24" smoothe bore barrel for my mossberg maverick 88 12 gauge shotgun. i have loaded lee drive key 12 gauge slugs in winchester waa12 1 1/8 oz wads with 18.5 grains of alliant unique powder and federal 209A primers in remington premier sts and nitro gold hulls. now bare with me while i explain the whole situation please. the irons on the barrel arent adjustabe enough. i have it set as low as possible(the setting on the rear sight is as far down as possible so the shot should hit low) and my slugs are still hitting about 4-7" high. i have a few questions. is this because of the load? if so, how would i make it more accurate? ive also used the winchester 15 pack rifled slugs and they hit high too. ive got a saddle mount for the thing with an NC star red dot sight but dont like it very much which is why i use the irons.
SO..i have a few questions about the lee slug itself. i cast them myself and want to know if the diameter is wide enough to be used in a rifled barrel without a wad around it. is it possible to shoot a slug with a wad around it in a rifled barrel and get very good accuracy? so thats one of my main questions, is the lee 1 oz drive key slug wide enough to be used in a rifled barrel without a wad surrounding it? also, whats the best load, commmercial or handload, for using in a rifled 12 gauge slug barrel? for best accuracy, whats the best load. i need this info for hunting as im thinking about buying a rifled barrel but i need the accuracy increase to be substantial and information on the loads.
thanks guys!
A rifled barrel offers the one true route to getting all you can get out of a slug in terms of accuracy and hitting at distance.
I went through a phase of experimentation with smoothbores. Then I bought a rifled Rossi 20 gauge. The improvement simply tells you the cost of the rifled gun is well worth it.
So, for me the answer is simply to get the rifled barrel.
alright so would the lee drivekey slug be tight enough in the bore by itself without a wad around it to dig into the grooves and twist? can you fire slugs inside of wads through a rifled barrel with very good accuracy?
well i bought some weaver 1" quad lock rings to put a 4-12x40mm bushnell sportsman scope in on the shotgun. i bought some of the 3" magnum 1 oz winchester super x slugs from walmart. im going to see if i can get my groups to tighten up with some factory brand new ammo with a decent scope instead of irons or that crappy Nc star red dot sight
ok well i got the scope all mounted up and shot all 15 of the winchester 3" magnums(OUCH!!!) and the groups were a bit better but i still wouldnt trust them to make an accurate cold bore shot on a deer. plus, i flinch a lot from the recoil of these darn things. theyre brutal. so what am i supposed to do? nothing seems to be accurate in this shotgun
The 1oz Win,s or Rem,s will be more accurate and dont kick much different than field load bird shot. They are real good out to 50yds and have possibilities out past 75yds.A 100yd shot has enough power and isn't unheard of.Personally,I like 5to25yds. ,,,sam.
so if i got a rifled barrel and used saboted slugs, would i notice a signifigant difference in accuracy over the rifled slugs in the smoothe bore? i want to know because i dont want to waste $150 on a rifled barrel if its not going to be any more accurate......also, if i got the rifled barrel would i be able to shoot my lee drive key slugs WITH the WAA12 wad out of it? like is it safe, accurate, etc too shoot a slug surrounded by a WAA12 wad out of a rifled barrel?
so is there a huge advantage OTHER than rifle type accuracy gained by a rifled barrel with sabot slugs over a smoothe bore with rifled slugs? i used some remington rifled slugs in my smoothe bore 12 gauge and got very good accuracy at 25 yards so i was wondering if its worth the $150 and the $15 per 5 rounds. if theres a bunch of advantages then i'll get that. but if accuracy is the only advantage then im going to buy this $100 50 caliber muzzle loader barrel for the mossberg 500 and see how that works out. that way i could hunt in both seasons(shotgun and muzzle loader) with one gun
