I got a Cobra 22 magnum Standard Derringer, to carry as a last ditch BUG to whatever ccw gun I am carrying, usually at least a 380, or 9mm or 38 +P.
I have light hollowpoints in 22 mag, but I wonder what you fellows would use in this little gun. I'd thought maybe a 40 gr solid would be better; that short barrel will not give much velocity, so maybe penetration would be the way to go. Can I get some advice? Thanks.

Unless you get some stellar advice here (which is very possible), I suggest jumping over to the SNS Forums and ask this question in either the Cobra-Lorcin-Davis forum or the Ammo forum.

.22 mag ammo is reasonable in price. I think if it were me I would buy 2 or 3 boxes and fire them into a box full of catalogs, magazines, etc and measure penetration depth.
Over the years we have test fired many rounds into the catalog backstop and then measured for depth and expansion of the bullets. Of course most was at fairly close range (20-30 feet) probably about the max you would run into in a confrontation. Myself I would want the MOST bullet expansion possible, taking more than one shot to neutralize a threat could be seen as somehow "wrong" and at close range there is a real chance of a pass thru and the bullet straying somewhere that could cause further grief.
I know of local guy that carried a small .22 derringer around in his pocket. He was in a buddy of mines store chit chatting and fiddling in his pockets and the gun went off. Needless to say he went on a trip to the hospital to get his leg worked on. What little playing I have done with derringer types I just don't trust them and certainly not with my life.
The closest thing to a SNS I have ever bought was a .380 Llama P.O.S. I bought it cheap brand new, fought it trying to fire fmj's thru it and then promptly traded it off on a new Colt .380 government about a week later. The Colt I would trust to function when needed.
