What am I doing wrong?

Here's the problem, a few months ago I started fishing with my son whos 5. Every time we go out he catches fish, sunnies crappies..., I on the other hand have caught nothing. I really have no idea what to do. This morning we went out and I did exactly what he did, I put a worm on a hook with a bobber and nothing. My son caught so many that he got bored and wanted to go home.

Are there any lures or bait that might help increase my chances of catching something, preferbly big mouth bass. pics would be a help also. Unfortunately there are no real bait & tackle shops or even sporting goods store around for help and tackle, we have a Dick's (hit and miss w/ help) and a Sports Authority (useless w/ help and selections).

thanks in advance.

by the way we are lake fishing.

You sound like me. At least that's how it always goes for me and why I'm not much into fishing. lol

It could be you're spending so much time helping your son and keeping an eye on him that you're not seeing your bobber dip or pole twitch or what ever. Do you have the same results when you go or if you've gone by yourself or with others your age or that you don't have to babysit?

But yea, I rarely catch anything myself. lol Relaxing my butt. lol

You're not doing anything wrong. You're taking your son fishing and he's catching fish and having a good time. Some day, you'll look back and cherish the memories...And so will he. Enjoy it while you can, it won't last forever. I commend you . You're doing everything RIGHT.

Maybe he just talks to the fish better than you.

Danny? Is that you? HAHA! Just kidding. My close friend and fishing buddy never catches anything even though he is the one who taught me how to fish! But, in all seriousness, I don't have any advice for you unfortunately. Just keep having fun with your little guy! Good luck!

Dont get me wrong, I love every minute we're out there. Most of the time I am watching or helping him. As far as talking to the fish, today he was. He was telling them that the worms were really tasty. Maybe thats the trick.

I just want to catch one fish before the winter hits. I did exactly as he was today, except talk to the fish, and he was pulling them out as soon as he put the hook in. Do you know how bad it is to be ridiculed by a 4 year that I cant catch fish and he can.

On a serious side I am looking for any tips for bass.

For bass, what time of day are you fishing? I like early early morning right at sunrise and I like to use a topwater lure along the shoreline for the most part. Try some different stuff besides just worms and see how that goes. Wal-Mart carries a decent buzzbait lure for a buck. It works really well for me with just a few minor modifications. Try some buzzbait, spinnerbait, maybe a spponbait and see what works for ya.

LOL it's just a thang, kids and women will outfish ya every time!

I like a beetle spinner, I buy mine at a local bait shop, but Wal-Marts carry them...the chartreuse green and orange/white ones work the best around here. I've caught smallies, largemouth, panfish, and rainbow trout on a beetle spinner, seems like most fish like 'em.

Only advice I can add is to keep in mind that fish relate to structure. Fishing sometimes can be a game of inches.

I didn't see where anyone suggested this before but another great bait for bass is plastic worms. Takes a bit to get the feel for working them but bump them slowly along the bottom and they are killer for bass. If the water where you fish is clear use light line and light tackle. Fish spook easily in clear water.

Plus, ya can't beat live shiners for bait.

The fish just flat out don't like you.LOL When I was stationed in NJ I used to fish the Raritan river with my kids. They would outfish me every time we went out. I convinced them that the fish didn't like me so they wouldn't bite my worms. They didn't believe me but at least they stopped picking on me.

I have exactly the opposite problem. When I take my nephews, and little cousins fishing, I catch all the fish. I want so badly for them to catch all the fish.

Case in point, I had my little cousin out on Leech lake this summer fishing muskies. He had a nice 49" follow his lure to the boat. He did everything right, going into the figure 8 right away. As he went into the figure 8 the fish pealed off and slammed my bucktail which was sitting dead in the water. I almost lost my rod, But was able to recover and boat and release the fish. It was weird as fish almost never hit a bucktail that is just hanging in the water and not moving. The kid almost cried. He fishes so hard, and just doesn't have any luck.

Heres a tip that will at least help you catch small fish. Tie on a small hook only. No leader or float. Use a small piece of worm. Cast it carefully out as far as you can. Let it sink. Something will hit it before it gets to the bottom. If not, after a couple of minutes pull it in and try again. For bass, a plastic worm cast out and retrieved slowly will usually pick up a hit.

Have your son spit on your worm, don't know why but it works. Actually, I never get invited fishing anymore because I alway outfish everyone. I bought two green rubber frogs with the curly things for the back legs. I caught an 8lb and an almost 7lb LM bass on those things. They love them.

I used to have this special little clear plastic minnow bait, that had a split back... It was the ultimate bass bait, period. PERIOD.

I caught TEN nice-sizes large mouths in fifteen minutes, without ever moving more than ten feet in either direction. Fishing from the bank.

I haven't been able to find them to save my life, but if you can, I can almost guarantee a hit.

It is your "Scent" on your hands repelling the fish , and his scent is not repelling them. Find some fishermans soap and wash your hands before you touch the line , hooks, bait, etc. You can spray a little WD-40 on your hands and rub it all over them too...and rub it on the hook and last ft. or 2 of line to remove or mask the scent...

Moose may be onto something here. Are you a smoker?

Personally, I agree with this right here. Just wait 'til he starts outshooting you! With YOUR guns! I'm always amazed when my grandson gets hits at 100 yards with my M1.

Thanks for all the reponses. Ron, no I dont smoke and I just started taking him to the range so it wont be long before he out shoots me.

Last week we went out again and I decided to do exactly what he did after watching him catch a bunch of fish. Guess what me skunked him a boat load of fish. At one point he was just dipping the worm in the water and pulling fish out.
