New Stevens model 200 in .223!

Hey guys! Im new on here and just wanted to say hi and ask about my new rifle! I look forward to meeting everyone!
I hear a lot of people saying that this rifle is a tack driver, shooting MOA and sub MOA groups at 100yards. I own this exact rifle but can't seem the be getting that kind of accuracy. I've seen on other forums that people have suggested to make sure the rear tang is free and make sure the barrel ( being free floated was not touching) and something about the action screws. Now my question is where is the rear tang? Is it the piece with the safety? And if so how much clearence should I have under this? I can get a bill about an inch in there and then it stops and won't go any farther.

If you have this rifle and have done other things (free do it your self stuff) to make it better could you please let me know. I think a big problem is the ammo I am shooting, Im shooting 55gr American Eagle hollow points now but only because they are cheap, I will be shooting better ammo before coyote season starts up again. I did break the barrel in ( 1 shot then clean 2 shot then clean then 5 shot clean then 6 and like that until 10 and then I sighted it in.) so all in all I'd say about 40 shots went through this gun. My other question is have you guys ever had a barrel get messed up by your cleaning rod? I have one thats copper I think, and I am afraid it will mess up my barrel I also have an aluminum one too.

Thanks in advance guys!
Kody

Welcome to g&g the stevens 200 has 9to1 twist rate. my 223 shoots 60 to 65 grain the best. the ammo you are shooting is not all that good. Try to find some ammo that is loaded from 55 to 73 grain this is what shoot best in a 9 to 1 barrle. look up rifle barrle cleanning and you will find why you need to use a bore guid. you can go on line to gunnersden and this site will tell you alot about the 223 rem. Also do not use milspec ammo 5.56x45 in your rifle it is loaded to hot for the rifle. hope you reload. also look at the trigger pull . this all will help your groups.

There is an extreme amount of material on the web about accuracy.Put "rifle accuracy"on your search and read up on it.I doubt that you will get MOA with factory ammo but it is possible. As to cleaning,A jointed rod is a "no-no" and fibreglass coated is best. One very important thing is the rod guide. You remove the bolt and insert the guide and look through it to be sure it lines up with the bore.If you get scrapes or rubs on the rod it is rubbing the bore.A boresnake might be your answer.Maybe others can post some sites on the web to help you with accuracy.I'm not good with a computer and can't get what I want you to read on here and it won't do you any good for me to read all of it. ,,,sam.
