M95 Long Rifle

Just picked up a Steyr M95 Long Rifle. Interested to see the recoil difference from the short. Hope to clean up this weekend and will post some pics.
Anybody else out there shooting the long version?

Thumbs up

The little carbines are rare as frog's hair down here, and I have never seen the long rifle 'in the metal'.
Recoil should be less, with longer barrel and greater weight. But I bet she'll still let you know she's been shot!

I don't have the long service rife. I have a Steyr 95 "Stutzen" carbine; essentially an M95 that was shortened before World War II and used by German and Austrian support troops. I've got about 120 rounds of Nazi marked 8x56mm in Steyr en-bloc chargers as well but I haven't shot it yet. I need to get a bayonet and proper sling.

I've got one of this same configuration. It was made in Budapest. I shot it last Wednesday. They are silly accurate. It was really a pleasent surprise. I can shoot 4 inch groups with it at 100 yards. I found a fella that makes a nice mild reload for about a buck a round. The best hundred dollar rifle I've ever bought!!!

I'd really like to get a long version. They've gotta be real tack drivers!

Anyone obtaining one of the full length rifles should be carefull and determine what caliber it is.These rifles can be found in the original 8x50R,the 8x56R which the currently available carbines are chambered in,and some were converted to 8mm Mauser by Hungary early in WW2.

and if during your search you come across a long barrel in 8x56R (in good condition of course), I want it!

good luck, however.

there is a M95 Long Rifle for sale in the WTS subforum over at another forum. I don't know if it's bad form to mention the name. He wants $350 and it looks to be in quite good condition.

and yes, I just want a long barrel.

Well, they cost about the same!

Of course, Mosinitis is a horrible disease. I have 10 Mosins for my 1 Steyr.

since the mosin is mentioned here i will add this, the 7.62x54 boxer ammo is cheaper than the 8x56 from graf and sons, and can be fireformed to 8x56. just in case you cant find brass, keep it in mind.

when you fireforn 7.62x54, the case design will change, bringing it to about 8x55, so you will have to seat the bullets slightly shallower if needed for accuracy, but i havent had a problem with that. i reloaded some fireformed x54 immediately after x56 without changing my seating die, and accuracy wasnt noticably different. i mean maybe 1/4 inch at 100 yds off sandbags open sighted. these arent modern hunting or target rifles anyway. not saying they cant be used as such, in fact, i bought mine for beating the heavy brush for hogs so i dont mess up my baby, a mod 700 with a leupold century edition goldring scope, which ran close to a grand combined. the old m95 i practically stole from a gun trader in town (25 bucks, wooohoooooo) aint pretty, its all beat up, but all numbers match, functions just fine on hogs out to around 150 yds. probably further, but i havent tried it cause i just cant see that well any more, and freely admit that im not that great shooting open sights offhand like you usually have to do with hogs around here. squirrels and bunnies at 15t to 75 or so with a 22 is fine, deer and hogs to 150 iron sighted ok, but i probably couldnt hit an elephant at 250 yds offhand without a scope. im ok from a rest open sighted to about 300 if the target is still, but hogs just dont stand around waiting to be shot.... does anyone know where to get a scope mount kit that doesnt require drilling and tapping the top of the reciever? with optics, i could open up the range, since i could SEE those dang things.

and thanks again for the fireforming info, at the price of ammo i may really try that when the loaded ammo i have can no longer be reloaded.

Except the fireformed 7.62 will be short!

Which I found out by accidentally shooting a 7.62X54R in my M95. Case shoulder came out beautiful, but it was still a few mm's short.

Why bother? When I first got the rifle, I bought a LOT of brass.
