Like I said it was the closest I have ever come to them in the wild and I feel very lucky that we were there to see them.

The wife was a bit nervous when he started walking closer to us and then when he stomped his foot and I told her what he was doing she really got scared. But he saw that we were not a threat and the group just ran infront of the 4Runner.

Chapman87 if I had my Dodge Ram I would've challanged him.

Neat stuff. We were in Yellowstone a couple of years ago and came upon a group of Bison. Two big bulls were snorting, pawing, etc. from each side of the road, getting pretty worked up. We were in my FILs minivan and felt a bit intimidated, but felt a high level of sympathy for the couple a few car length ahead of us in a Miata with the top down. The one bull was about 10 feet from their car. I think they had a good look at his belly.

Those rams are fantastic!

Nice, I've been down to the lake dozens of times and the only animals I ever say were a few jack rabbits...I did see some wild boroughs out by red rocks a few years ago. We outta get together and go shooting this fall sometime now that the weather is going to start to cool off.

This really made my day.
Awesome sight...

...and one I hope to see soon, in the form of elk.

Thanks for sharing...

Nice pics...I have been to Lake Mead several times and never saw any bighorns...I used to see them sometimes (along with mt. goats) in the Gorge, between Las Vegas and Saint George, Utah.

Once in a great while I'll get to see some bighorns driving through the mountains here on I-70, but it's gotta be early in the morning.

I sure wish I had just one ram horn. I could do some serious carving on it.

You can buy 'em, but they're hollow on the inside, and the outside is pretty rough. All ridgey, IIRC, not smooth. The outer part you see is basically a covering for the bone inside, and they separate after drying out. Just like cow horns. The grandson "had to have one" when we found some at a souvenier shop.

The folks on the colorado4x4.org forum that post up photos of their trail trips, frequently have photos of mountain goats (not sheep), and the goats are so used to humans coming by in vehicles that they just stand there and let you take their pictures. I guess the goats aren't hunted as much as the sheep, so they're not as skittish. It is pretty cool to see a bunch of the sheep on the side of the highway grazing, but you're usually past them in a flash and only get a glimpse.

I've seen bighorns now & then along the Arkansas river while driving highway 50 between Canon City & Salida. Of course, it's called Bighorn Canyon. Saw a ram with a full curl about 10 years ago while coming home from elk hunting. He was standing on a rock outcropping right next to the road. Unfortunately, there was no place to pull over for a picture. He was a magnificent specimen.

Great pics, BTW!
