Savage MK11 BTVS vs used +REM. 540x for rimfire BR

Hi,
I am interested in breaking into rimfire bench rest but am considering starting with a factory sporter class rifle as an inexpensive introduction to the game, rather than starting with a custom rig at $2-4000. I was impressed with Outdoor life's tests of the Savage MK11 BTVS, sub 1/4" groups @ 50 yds., and was ready to buy one when I talked to a local who poo pooed my choice. He suggested a used remmington 540x or 513T. I also see many people who like CZ better. I am unclear on sorting all this out and could stand some objective assistance. I am hoping to keep my initial investment below $1000 including gun, scope, accessories, rest etc. I already own a very good 60x nikon spotting scope so I can skip that expense at least. Your thoughts please.
