All joking aside. I hope you get the animal that is killing your livestock. If I lived closer I would be willing to set up with you at night and try to kill whatever it is.

What if it is a black Jaguar? Would kind of look like a dog, And it would certainly have a bad temper. They are pretty rare in the US, But there have been cases where they have been seen as far north as Illinois and Ohio. This might look like a "dog like" creature to a dog, or be interpeted as such by your animal commuicator. I know it's a long shot, But so is a bear jumping an electric fence, killing an animal and not eating it, especially this time of year.
They look like this, and their range seems to moving north. File:Jaguar.jpg - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

com | The local state wildlife boys have told me those don't exist here.
Even tho one was shot and killed last year about 60 miles east of here,
they don't exist.
Now, the local good old boys say otherwise.
I'm not ruling anything out.
I'm just going to start looking up in trees as well as on the ground.
I'm moving our horse trailer around back into this pasture. It makes
a fine hunting blind and is solid enough to give me some protection.
I've used it like that before going after dogs.

If it is a Jag, Be very, very careful. They are far larger and more aggressive than a cougar. If you do get a shot closer than 100yrds, pin the front shoulder blades. The tend not to go very far with broken shoulders, But can go 200-300 yards easy with a double lung.
The horse trailer is a good idea, It will also mask your scent somewhat if you have used it recently for horses.
The Minnesota DNR is always denying there are big cats in Minnesota. But they shot a Jaguar in Bloomington about three years go. Not a Mountain Lion mind you, and Jaguar. Bloomington is a suburb of Minneapolis.

We all here care...A.H | Thanks. I got a call from a local person. If I understand correctly
someone will be out with some big traps either yet today or tomorrow.
I've sparked a whole lot of interest here to.
I'm betting they will catch a whole lot of dogs before they catch a cat.
Now I just need to find some help for the sheep rancher in Wright county,
missouri. He's having a worse time then I am.
So anybody around the Wright county area that wants to do a little
cap sniping, email me at Randy@MeinerSolutions.com and I will put you
in touch with the guy.

RJMAcres, you can call me paranoid if you want, but I'd give some thought to investing in a LeadSled gun rest for your trailer and getting something with some real authority to deal with this critter. I'm thinking about something in .50 BMG. Barrett makes a couple of bolt actions that aren't terribly expensive by .50 BMG standards. The Model 95 is a bullpup configuration that you could move around fairly easily. Might be just what you need.

Why am I not hearing anything of this? These things get around in these parts and nobody here is complaining. I'd love nothing more than an excuse to try out the new night scope when it arrives, but I'd sure like to be a little more sure about it before I spent a Friday night in the woods for nuthin.
If you have a problem as described, I highly doubt it's a bear. Although there are a few around here (Glade Top Trail area for example and some just north of Ava near Mount Zion), American Black Bear is about 98% herbivore and can't jump multi-hot electric fences. In fact neither would a coyote if your entire lot is wired. There are supposed to be a few big cats around, and who knows what's been let loose by the amateur exotic owner who couldn't handle his leopard or lion and it got loose, but those are really rare.
If you or somebody in Wright County REALLY need assistance, I'll have the scope in 2 weeks and I'll help out. You can PM me on this site. The only requirement is that before any night hunt, neighbors must be informed and written permission to shoot varmint animals on private property.

Oh, on add, I've cut the tounges out of my sheep so they can't tell your critter whisperer anything!

She doesn't need to be anywhere near them to talk with them.
If you see your sheeps eyes glaze over I'm guessing the sheriff is
already on the way. But he might also just be looking for a date.

If you take the horse trailer out there, take a hand-held camera with you. Never know what you might see. Get a photo of the critter prowlin around and/or after you kill it.

Don't discount an exotic cat. People think these things make nice pets and then find out they can't handle them as they grow, so they turn them loose. I would expect that someone would have seen something. With deer season in the near future, someone might catch sight of it.

Does the cat look like this? Print the pic and ask your dog.

LMAO, that literally made me crack up laughing!
To contribute something useful to this thread... You can make your own super-bright IR spotlights or floodlights with a little electrical know-how and a regular incandescent spotlight frame/shell.
OR, get one of these and a whole hell ton of IR LEDs, a good soldering iron, a pile of electrical solder, and go to town making a giant IR LED array. Then, you can get some sort of plastic housing for it with a clear front. You can use these long after your problem is taken care of.

Could you post pics of the dead llama and killed livestock, and maybe a pic of the dog with bite out? Also maybe a copy of report of livestock loss? Surly you had insurance on them as much as they cost.

Sorry, I wasn't smart enough to take pictures of the llamas wounds.
Already caught that lecture from the state wildlife boys. Same for burying
her right away. Guess I shouldn't have done that. But wanted her in
the ground before nightfall. Didn't want any predators catching the
scent and causing me more problems. Also storm was coming and you do
not want to be outside on a tractor when lightning fires up here. We're
the highest point for miles and miles and take lots of lightning hits on the
farm.
No insurance, I can afford to take the monetary hit and I hate paying
insurance companies. Don't have a copy of livestock report. Going to
have a big phone bill however with long distance calls all over the state
wildlife guys, other farmers who have reported similer situations, etc.
Here's a picture of dog's wound. That's a 150 pound great pyreneese.
The wound is about the size of a baseball. Not real deep. Teeth or claw
marks were fairly shallow and are covered by the bloody scab in the pic.
Now if you know anything about llamas, here is a link to a picture of a
couple of our llamas including the 1 that was killed. The big white one was killed. http://www.rjmacres.com/
The cria (baby llama) in the picture was killed by wild dogs 2 days after
that picture was on the front page of the local paper. All sorts of reports
filled out on that attack.
I was out for hours looking for tracks yesterday.
Ground was damp. Found no tracks but did find a clearing with lots
of bones there. Also found the skull of a goat that we had go missing
a month or so ago. Thought it had just gotten out and wanderd off.
That happens with goats from time to time but ours usually come on
back up towards the house.
Randy

Sorry to sound that way, I do believe you, seeing the chunk out.
A friend lost a mini horse in Elsberry MO to a large cat that CA denies is around.
Tore it up bad, claw marks all over, another got scratched before dogs ran off with a ruckus. It is disheartening to have this beast around. Do cats retreat to same area to eat? I didnt think so, but I dont know. Im thinking bear except for fence height.
Would like to help, but all way across state unless gunnut2u wants to go.
Good luck with hunt and prod those local members to help. All in all I think they can help to get it done. The sooner the better as it will screw up deer season for sure. Does deer population seem to be staying away?
Good luck.......Tony
