He said all he found was bones from the goat, and even then two weeks later, I think it was. No luck there.

I don't understand how you determined that the four dogs are scared of cougars. That is very puzzling. That breed of dog usually, especially if part of a group, do not mind taking on big cats. Are you sure it is cats they are afraid of??
About the goat that was carried off; did you find the body soon enough to tell if it had been torn open and the heart and liver taken?
Have you heard unusual noises from the woods in the very early part of the night, or during the very early morning hours?
Regards | Our oldest pyr and I saw a big cat a few years ago. She whined and
came over to me and sat. She was afraid. She is pretty small for the
breed. I'm guessing at the other 3 as she trained them. If so, that is
the only thing they are afraid of. The oldest pyr and another saved my
butt from a pissed off mama black bear a few years ago. I got to close
to a cub. Didn't see either bear until mama stood up for me.
We have been hearing noises from the woods for the past several months.
You can hear twigs and branches snapping. BIg cats don't do that but
neither do the bears here. This would be not to long after dark. Haven't
heard a cat scream in some times but we do hear the bears go huffing and
puffing by quite often. They sound like a cross between a fog horn and
a sick cow.
Nope, didn't find the goat soon enough. It was just bones left and they
were scattered around pretty good.
Chatted with a few of the cattle ranchers today. They all said the cattle
have been making more noise at night then whats normal. They haven't
see a cat or a bear in quite some time.
Tomorrow I will be setting up game cameras. That will be the first time
I've had a few hours to get to a big town in weeks. I went to our town
today but it's pretty much shut down until Monday for our fall celebration.

With that information, I must once again bring up the possibility of El Chupacabra! lol, I PMed you by the way, RJMA.
Where do you keep the goats and llamas at night? If you just let them roam at night, I guess there's not much to do there... But if you board them up in the barn or something similar, set up the cameras around them and see if anything comes sniffing.

By your Description of the Kill site / and the Bite Marks without Claw marks , I'm Wondering if you dont have a Large Lone Wolf on your hands...They Can leap over Electric Fences , They Chew Bones into small Pieces , They can drag large animals twice the size , the print looks like a Large Dog , and They can watch you from afar and are very Savvy.
I would have left the Carcass near where it was found and that would have been the Bait , because more than likely , it would return to feed on the Kill some more, and I would have been in a blind or Stand in a tree waiting...
Wolves Can travel Hundreds of Miles in a few days but will stay in an area until they eat everything possible before moving to better food areas...
My 2 cents...I would be A snare setting fool !

Rich | But would a large wolf hop into the pasture where there are 4 great
pyreneese ? We did have some large wolf like things around for awhile
but I'm pretty sure I took care of all of them. I was guessing they were
wolf hybrids that either escaped or were dumped. Those suckers were
huge, very smart and thought I looked tasty.

A hungry wolf will attack anything including bears ! They will eat peoples dogs and have up here in Alaska on numerous occasions...They have No fear.
The bite will be rounded and the print will be 3-5 inches wide and look similar to a dog...

It's a bear. Big black bear and it is royally pissed off about something.
We were out by the barn feeding the goats and dogs. I had just come
back from the edge of the woods setting the game cameras. Heard something
but thought it was a cow. Then my wife screeched & pointed. Bear was just
on the other side of the fence and it roared. And it roared again. And all I
had on me was the 9mm thinking cat. It was only about 40 yards away, my
wife is crapping all over herself. I cranked off a few rounds in the general
direction, wife is headed for the gate, bear is now headed back into the woods.
I need a bigger friggen gun and like yesterday.
I went to 3 pawn & gun shops as well as a gun show this morning.
Found diddly for a .357 and what I did find must have been gold plated.
But just as well as I think a .357 might just piss this bear off even more.
Not sure what I need but I need something bigger then the 30-30 and 9mm
for this bear.
And I just might need a change of underwear. I just wasn't expecting or
prepared for a bear. I was still thinking big cat.

I'm a rifle guy, shotguns usually slip my mind... Upon reconsidering, I'd go with the 12 gauge pump and slugs as well.

Good Luck, hope you get him ! | He either got in and out 1 of 2 ways.
We've been having lots of power outages the past few weeks.
Sometimes up to 3-4 hours at a time.
Or he could have climbed 1 of the gates but I will get those hotwired
tomorrow. Going to have someone come cover my ass while I do that.
This bear is not afraid of me at all.

But damn this is getting the best of me.
This sucker was big and it wasn't worried about us in the least.
Now, the 4 great pyreneese did head for the bear even while I was
shooting. 1 of the pyrs is scared to death of gun fire but it sure didn't
bother her today.
Now I was kind of stupid and I did want to get that 2nd game camera up
in place so I had my wife cover my butt with the 12g with 3" magnums
with 00 in it. I did get the camera up and I was real fast doing it.
I knew about where the bear was at the time or at least where it had
been a few minutes before. I had about 100 or so yards between us.

heck that shotgun with that buckshot will do some damage to a bear. I would highly suggest a 45-70 if its going to be that close. Wish I had know you were looking for a rifle I recently sold a brand new marlin 45-70 guide gun for 350. Best of luck and stay safe out there.
