Mini 30 question - urgent

A friend is taking his son deer hunting during a special youth season this Thursday. The only thing I have suitable for an 11 yr old boy is a Mini 30.

I can't find my 5 rnd magazine, legally required, so I need to know a couple things right away. Any pblms with using it as a single shot by just dropping a round in the chamber and letting the bolt home?

I've never shot the rifle without a magazine. It seems to click/fire without a magazine in place, any issues with that?

The boy has a 22 bolt gun and 20ga shotgun and his father is going along so familiarization and safety should not be an issue. Thanks for any help.

Single loading a Mini should not be a problem. Hunt and have a great time!

My friend and his son just left with the Mini 30 and two boxes of Remington 125gr PSPs. They intend to get familiar with the rifle tomorrow and go hunting Thursday. It's still a little long for the boy but I think he'll do ok. Weather's pretty mild right now so he won't have thick clothes to worry about.

I found out tonight they're hunting on a friend who already has a stand set up so they should be good to go. I told them to take a camera and I'll post pictures if he gets one. Thanks much for the info and help; I didn't want to send the boy out with something that wasn't going to fuction.

Well, they saw a few but didn't get a shot. I told them to keep the rifle thru the regular season so maybe the kid will get one yet.
