what would d.c. do?

what do you guys think of the possibility of d.c. leaving the union for lack of representation in the u.s. senate?
my brother in d.c. asked me about a guy wearing a shirt that said "no taxation no representation" on the front of and "free d.c" on the back of a tee shirt.
he didn't understand what it was about and asked me.
i told him as far as i knew it was probably a statement about the fact that d.c. has no representation in the u.s. senate and limited rights in the house of reps.
he was kinda shocked to hear this.
after a few seconds of silence he said "what would happen if d.c. tried to leave the union on the grounds of "no taxation, no representation" .
i replied that most people would be happy to let it leave and probably give it some lovely parting gifts.
what do you guys think?
if wash d.c. decided to leave what would you do?
i would personally do my happy dance.

The way things are going, the "new" seat of government would end up in the UN building.

They could just dissolve it and return it to Maryland. Then we could build a new capital in place that would ensure both self imposed term limits and that our reps. spend more time at home. I nominate either Death Valley or Attu. If they do your invited to my house for the celebratory BBQ.

I don't want them in Death Valley. It's to close to me and they would just ruin it anyways.

Maybe they ought to move the DC residents to Illinois so they can see what taxes are WITH representation.

Here's a thought. Let DC revert to Maryland and move the seat of government to Cheyenne Mountain. It's been replaced as NORAD HQ by a nearby facility anyhow, so it's available. This would have the following advantages:

1. No hookers and no night life. The elected officials would be able to concentrate on their jobs.

2. Communications are already in place. No expensive start-up costs.

3. Temperature is constant year round. It's a "green" site in terms of air conditioning.

4. Any time the jackasses got too obstreperous over a bill, we could do to them what Jesse Ventura did to the Budget Committee when they didn't want to submit the state budget on time: We lock them inside the mountain and refuse to let them out until they get their act together and settle the matter!

5. Any time they REALLY started acting in a way that was harmful to the country, we lock them inside the mountain, wait two months, then schedule elections for a whole new set of legislators. Their first job would be to remove the bodies of their predecessors from the Cheyenne Mountain Capitol Facility. It would prove salutary to them as to what the People expect of them.

I'm just kidding with the last one - note the purple lettering it's been proposed we use to indicate sarcasm - but it IS a nice fantasy.
